Global collections

It currently seems that collections are specific to a given library. I seems that this is a good implementation but limited at times.

I think it would be good to be able to also have a collection, or set of collections, that are global. That is the collection would be available and could contain movies and other videos from any of the libraries and behave much like "On Deck" at the top menu so that you could choose that

One of the main differences from "On Deck" would be that the presence of an item would not go away after it was watched.

This functionality may all ready be available via "Play Lists" but I would not know as my primary client (Roku) apparently cannot use "Play Lists" yet.

I was just about to add a similar request, but you got there first, although it shouldn't be limited to just video.  In a multi-media environment you typically have collections strewn across multiple libraries.  Taking Star Wars, I have:

  • The movies in my main Movies library
  • The sound tracks in a Music library
  • Documentaries and Clone Wars in the TV library
  • Photos from conventions in the Photos library
  • and my own videos and other miscellaneous stuff in various Home Video libraries

Providing I've tagged them all with the same collection, it would be great to gather them to all be accessible from a single screen.

Kyttkat, I thank you for the comment. I really wish this would get implemented but I think Plex is unlikely to do it as they seem to have other priorities.

Yup, you can do this with playlists, but need it implemented on the Roku.

If you've got them tagged correctly, you can do a search, not ideal but a work-around.  If you are comfortable manually editing the Plex database, you can accomplish what you want with the playlist feature.  From the UI movies and music can't be put in the same playlist, but if you edit the database you can get them all together.  Not sure about photos, I haven't tried that yet.  This will play correctly through the webapp.  Not sure about other clients since playlists aren't supported yet in my other main clients (Roku and Android).

Are you saying that you want a Collection / Playlist that will do the following

  • Play The Star Wars Movies Collection
  • Then Play DVD Extras
  • Then Play the Sound Tracks
  • Then Play TV Series
  • Then Play Photos

Well that is a long weekend! :-)

I know what you are saying but I can't see anyway around the separation by Media that Plex does - In fact I was surprised that they let you add Movies/Videos to playlists in the first place (Nice Surprise since I have Home Moves that it works great on).

I would think you would almost need a Channel to support what you are looking for, that you select all that media and combine it, I am happy with Sort Order for what I am doing in the movies section.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (indirectly -> same-named collections in different libraries show up as related content inside each of those collections, e.g. “tv shows in Star Wars collection”)
