@elan I appreciate that you are participating in this forum. That demonstrates that you value what your users say. I do wish that you would address the question that several people have asked:
If Netflix, Spotify, Emby and others have managed to integrate with Google Assistant, why can’t Plex do the same?
I think we’re conflating a few things here; doing remote control via Google Home is possible; local playback is not. This is why we support Alexa, the “remote control only” scenario is just not super interesting.
If that is the case, can we get remote control via Google home beyond just play and pause? Because really that’s just default chromecast controls right?
If you’re doing it with alexa, can we at least get those features on Google home?
Btw… A couple of years ago I built a diy alexa on a raspberry pi to try the integration and it was great!!!
This was the ACTUAL response
Me: Alexa, play Super Troopers 2, on Plex on basement TV.
Alexa: Okay, playing Super Troopers 2 on basement TV right MEOW
I DIED LAUGHING
why can’t we get this on Google? Please please please!
Local playback? It would be great for the Plex app on an Android/Google/(whatever they call it next) TV to respond to voice commands (like other apps, such as Netflix etc.) - is that considered local playback?
And if so, why can everybody else do it? Is it because their content is centrally managed in the cloud while we run individual servers from home (and if so why can Emby do it)? I think many of us are struggling with being ignored paying Plex customers while being used to this feature on other systems - without a reasonable explanation what’s holding it up.
Ideally Plex commands work with Google Assistant so we can create routines that adjusts our smart-homes for movie watching and tell the microwave to fry up some popcorn.
Like others I’d rather have more solid integration of Plex as a personal media library than Tidal (why? don’t they have their own app?) and News and random TV, Podcasts, etc - many of which are available on better suited apps that HAVE Assistant Integration.
It would be great, but please concentrate on improving basic live TV features as it currently stands on android, it’s so buggy. Can’t watch shows currently recording until they finish and can’t search the TV guide. Basic features that should work on any DVR worth it’s salt.
We use Plex, Google Home, Google Assistant and Chromecast in our house all the time. It would be great if we could use our voice commands with Google Home to play TV Shows or Movies on our Chromecast.
It works great with Netflix, Hulu and Disney+. The kids can play stuff on their own whenever they like without mommy or daddy having to get a device out to manually cast stuff to the TV!
I hope everyone in this thread is headed over to Google support forums and making the same request over THERE.
@elan has made it pretty clear that this is not a lack of interest from Plex or a Plex technical issue. It is a Google issue. Plex can’t control things that Google doesn’t make available to them. Google is not a great partner.
I’ve been annoyed that Plex wasn’t fully supported on Chromecast and Google Assistant but I just bought a Google Chromecast with Google TV (catchy name, Google) and am very pleased to see a marked improvement.
I may be late to the game but for those who don’t know, you can install Plex as an app on it and have your full collection to search by voice and scroll through and you can now even rewind and fast forward by voice!
I could always pause and play but if I tried to skip back or forward it would just skip back to the start of whatever was playing.
Being able to skip back was the thing I wanted most but being able to show the whole collection on screen rather than passing a mobile phone around when friends are over is brilliant!
The device itself has lots of issues as far as I can tell. It constantly turns off WiFi on its own for no reason so I bought the ethernet adapter and used power line adapters to get ethernet to the TV. This seems to be a common issue, not sure why Google hasn’t fixed it yet and I resent being sold a poor product but now I know it works well with Plex I can’t return it as I planned to!
Maybe I’ve been missing something all along but hopefully this solves the issue for sone others. I tried Emby and didn’t get on with it. The steaming services have terrible collections so I needed something and Plex was merely okay. Now I’m much happier.
I only have the CCWGTV on one of my TVs but it is the one I’m most likely to want to show off the collection on to friends and watch movies.
I run a little wired Raspberry Pi media server so it’s now ethernet all the way, on that TV at least, which is nice.
I also appreciate the response from Elan, but I’m not buying it is an issue with available APIs etc. it is about $. Plex is clearly looking at the underlying business model. So it comes down to a business decision.
If you have already paid for the Lifetime Plex pass, Plex wont miss you when you move to another service. Sorry, but they have your money already.
For those who have not paid for a life time pass, I find it a bit of a stretch that Plex market itself as a ‘wire cutter’…when they omit the bit that says ‘only if you use Amazon’. So let your wallets do the talking.
Thanks, this response prompted me to install Emby and link my first Server. I’ll be testing it now to see if it suits my needs, which includes Google Home integration.
