Google home integration

Well yeah…when you tell the Google Home to play something no matter it be video or audio…it’s being casted. It would be silly for the Plex team to intentionally not implement Google Casting support. So Google not providing Plex and other third parties with the right tools to be able to implement this makes more sense to me, especially since it was an employee of Plex that verified this. And with Googles track record this would be no surprise to me.

How, exactly, is the Assistant’s ability to integrate with third-party app API’s casting? Also, the companies mentioned in my post are third-parties. This is not a failure on Google’s end, the ball is squarely in Plex’s court.

You need the API and the correct tools to be able to develop the ability to cast and enable it in the device and for each third party service (from what I am aware). I’m just relaying the information that was provided to me on these forums by an employee of Plex. Perhaps asking @vanstinator directly might have better results.

Hello? Obviously the tools are already available for app developers, how else would Deezer be Assistant enabled?

You’re referencing outdated information. Google opened up the voice commands API in December 2016.

I am referencing information that was told to me on July 16th of this year.

From here on I don’t know what more I can say to get this ball rolling or prove to you that this is what an employee of Plex has stated.

Dude are you a Brick, that is about Chromecast… the topic at hand is not the same thing. RTFM.

There seems to be some confusion on your end as to what is currently being requested. The Google Home Integration that is being requested is for the ability to verbally ask your Google Home to play video/music onto a television that has Chromecast plugged in (since Plex already supports Google Assistant on Android TV). Plex has supported Chromecast for a long time now so I am not certain about the confusion you are expressing. No need to get rude about it. We are all here because we want the same thing. Also, don’t be a hypocrite…it doesn’t suit you well.

Clearly I’m not the one confused. I suggest you read the OP of this thread.

You can already stream audio via mobile device directly to a home device via Plex app. I’m not gonna argue with you, as you are just pointing out thing’s that are completely irrelevant to this request…especially if you took the time to read the Op post as you suggested. Peace.

I know that you can cast directly from the Plex app, which is why nobody is even talking about that rofl

Again…enough said. Peace…again. :peace_symbol:

This would be awsome release it as a video service like Viaplay, Netflix etc.

No names were called, I asked politely. @Dafreakzo you’ve misinterpreted what this thread is about.

Me: “Ok Google, play Despacito”

Because I’ve already set up my default target cast device in the Assistant’s options, and because I’ve already setup my default music service (Plex) in the Assistant’s options, I magically hear Despacito. The missing step is Plex as the default music/video service. That is 100% up to the Plex developers to implement, as the SDK for this very thing is already available. So bringing in incorrect information, regardless of the source, is beyond useless.

Now, if I’m mistaken about this, please let me know, but please use sources that aren’t easily refutable by Google’s own developer documentation.

100% agree to disagree as what you are saying is not what is transpiring.

@Dafreakzo Does this thread make sense to you now?

The Plex employee is correct, as I have previously mentioned elsewhere in this thread. We have Google Voice actions, we can build whatever we want with this, we could easily query what is available on a Plex server by building a Google Voice action. The problem is the next step, there is no (public) API for a Google Voice action to find a Chromecast and send something to it. So for example “OK Google, play Stranger Things” behind the scenes Google queries all the linked services to find out if any of those services have the item you requested (but I’m pretty sure they do this with a cache of the content each service provides), and then instructs that service to send the requested media to the requested Chromecast. Google would need Plex to provide some sort of service that allows Google to query the content that is available as well as a service that allows Google to instruct Plex to send the content to the Chromecast. Up to now - only selected partners appear to have been given this ability. eg in the UK BBC iPlayer (the launch partner of the Chromecast in the UK) does not have the ability to cast content with your voice - but Channel 4 (4oD) does and it gained the ability with very little fanfare, or hints that it was coming - in the last few months. Plex could well have the backend stuff ready to go - but without knowing how the Google side of the equation works, Plex are just left waiting.

(It may be worth knowing - that there is a better than good chance that it may never happen, so far they have only added services that are purely online, and very likely have a dump listing every piece of content on their servers that Google can ingest so the decision to decide which service contains the media you asked for - can all be done on Googles servers without adding significant slowdown by querying 3rd party servers. Because these online services make their content available to ALL users that have an account, then there will be a single index of content. Plex however works differently - everyone has different content, and I doubt Google will be able to handle that use case, it would in effect be as if Plex was a great many different services instead of just one.

Emby advertises Google Home, integration. How do they do it and how tight is that integration? Has anyone tried it?
