Gotta pay to stream my own stuff, with my own hardware/bandwidth... No Thanks

No thanks, I don’t follow Plex and come to the forums to hang out and nerd out, nobody contacted me about the idea and then a price increase same day. I have a media server, Plex doesn’t have a media server? Make a change to Plex, increase price, and force a subscription to stream from my own box with my own bandwidth… Lol no thank you.

No I’m not posting this in whatever other part of the forum someone is going to tell me to take this when this gets moved or deleted. I posted this here, because this is what I use… Plex Media Server… I’m not paying a subscription to use my own stuff.

P. S To the folks that say support Plex, I already have… This isn’t Netflix this is my hardware and my bandwidth.

Yep. It’s pure chaos. Many of us are exploring other options (open source).

Well there are other options. Honestly, I did Plex lifetime pass about a decade ago (I think? Been a long time) and best money I ever spent at that time. I didn’t know anything about setting up media server and Plex was simple.

Now…ugh, they seem to only be making things worse.

Jellyfin works quite nicely and is very painless to setup. You can even sync your watch history from Plex ↔ Jellyfin using jellyplex-watched that works quite nicely. You can run both Jellyfin and Plex on the same server at the same time, pointing at the same media locations without issue.

Give it a shot and see if it meets your needs. It’s not perfect by any stretch, but it’s free.

I saw this coming and predicted it happening years ago. The users here attacked me. Plex will soon be cutting the ability to play your own media all together and will make an attempt at becoming a “one stop shop” for cross-platform streaming.

Right now LIVE TV has the same 10 year old programming as all the other startups.

I do pay for plex mostly for trailers but with the price increase, I may set up. No-IP and do a direct connection so that I don’t need plex.tv at all.

Feel free to watch your material any way you want without Plex. I’ve gotten my Lifetime PlexPass a few years back and it was the best money spent in a long time. You don’t want to pay for premium software features: then don’t.

Also: this is not an airport; no need to announce your departure

Time to move to Jellyfin!

See, ^ someone thinks I don’t have a right to let a company know how I feel or what I think a mistake is. At the same time the mantra of if you don’t want to pay for it than don’t, is so troll. It’s not premium software for one… The data aggregation, thumbnails etc etc are all open source on the Internet (Plex used to solely use them before making their own db’s). As for Plex the software, if you wanna go that route, they aren’t changing you for the software, are they? They are charging you to STREAM … Plex Media Server has been free since the beginning, if they want to charge for software then open that door, but that’s not what they are doing… And this a subscription.

Kudos on you for buying Plex pass and lifetime back when it was XX amount, would you pay whatever it is now? Also your right this isn’t an airport, it’s a forum… Exactly where this belongs, you don’t have to comment, but you did so just like you, I’ll announce whatever I want to, you know in a forum… Like I would just as if I was at a town hall meeting.

Go sensor yourself.
