I have the RTX 4000 Quadro, servers cpus are quad 8280s Im experiencing something where disabling hardware acceleration is not only faster (remote folks report movies start within 2-3 seconds), but I can uncap the remote limit and they have no issues, with GPU Acceleration, they can wait up to 13 seconds to start a movie that transcodes etc, is there a setting Im missing that makes hardware trans-coding a worse option?
Wait, your server has 4 8280s in it? What else do you use it for?
well with 112 cores and 224 threads there is literally no reason to use a GPU. The reason to use GPUs is not for speed, it’s because they normally can handle more transcodes than a CPU, albeit at lower quality than the CPU. But, with that many cores, you should let the CPU handle the transcodes, they will be as fast if not faster as your users are seeing, and the quality will be better.
Just plex
Yeah I tested tossing in Dual RTX 6000s, same thing happens, when trans-codes start up, RTX4000 by itself or dual RTX 6000s in NVLINK, theres more delay in starting the video vs straight cpus. I did have 37 trans-codes going at once, only 12% CPU use, but its 2-3 seconds remote start with CPUs, also seems to be less issues generally speaking (GPU transcodes on some 4k streams would be distorted while cpu by itself just works). The transcode directory, I assigned 128GB to a ramdrive, so its a fairly smooth running setup
This is when it was doing 37 transcodes…mix of 1080p and 720p
Also put in a pair of 2080s, SLI’d those (recently upgraded my gaming machine to the 3090 so the 2080s had nothing else to do), it seems theres always a 10-13 second delay to start a GPU transcode
