It adds the collection information as a tag to the movie. Plex does not group the movies together like Emby does, but you can filter your library by collections to find the specific collection you are looking for. This thread is basically a request for Plex to group the collections like Emby does. If you like this idea, please like the original post.

I just set up Plex last night after a long time using Emby. When creating a movie library, under advanced, does anyone know what the āuse collection info from the movie databaseā is for?I had assumed it would create collections for you based on the movie db collection id - this is what Emby does and it is brilliant. Canāt imagine it would be that hard to implement giving the metadata is there.
Thereās a long and heated discussion about this (and a few other features) elsewhere and why with 1100+ votes it isnāt already a feature. True enough about Emby collections are fantastic but for me other things where way behind Plex.
Iām pretty sure it will happen eventually, that said its been around 4 years since the feature was requested.
Be aware that the filter that @MovieFan.Plex mentions is severely flawed and will actually regard a single one off movie as a collection of its own so its not exactly a great filter.
If you have lots of patience there is a manual way of creating your collections in a more āEmby likeā tile method.
Currently I create playlists for my collections. You need to add them manually and in the correct chronological order. The downside currently is that they will be inter mingled with all other playlists such as Music. However in the discussion I mentioned, Elan disclosed that each library will have its own playlist section in the near future.
Not perfect especially if you want to create hundreds of duologies. But for trilogies and upwards it isnāt too painful (and I have around 1900 movies.)
Sorry the news isnāt better.

Yes, I am seeing that. If I only own a single movie that is technically part of collection, I see the ācollectionā listed in the collection filter - certainly not ideal. Not having āproperā collection functionality is not a big deal for me, but certainly would be nice.

To be fair the one-off collection names comes from TheMovieDB. PMS just imports it from them.

Yeah I figured that was the case.
Anyway Iām happy enough to create my own collections when the āper libraryā playlists arrive ![]()

Of course the name comes from movie db. But would be nice if there were an option in Plex to not show the collection in the filter when # movies in collection < 2 (or some user defined value)

That would complicate the programming needed to implement. If you keep the tags cleaned up when you add the media, this wouldnāt be an issue. Just remove any collection information when you go into the media item for the single items. Once you edit the field, it should lock and shouldnāt be edited unless you change the agents around.
This is probably the biggest complaint most users have with large libraries. They have 2000 or so movies and want to trim things down to a smaller scrolling mass, by grouping the Harry Potters together, the Star Wars together, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, etc. Itās hard to find something to watch when you have a mass that moves slowly on your player.
As the OP of the thread that @HitsVille references, all I can say here is many of us Pass members have been asking for this as well. If you REALLY want this as a feature, get those people you share with onto the forums and have them vote this up. @elan justifies the lack of movement on these Feature Requests many Pass members have been voting on by saying we donāt represent the entire Plex community. So itās likely time to get the community involved in a major scale, if you want something before senility sets in.

I agree the āproperā implementation that has been asked for would be ideal. But given that has this has been asked for so long, I thought my suggestion might work given what is currently implemented filter wise.
Manually maintaining tags may be fine when adding a movie or 2 at a time. But at initial library load, for me personally, more effort than it is worth to go through all the listed collections, identify where I only have one movie and then go in and remove the collection id on that item. Only to have to remember to go in and re-add it when I do get another movie in the collection.
For those movies that I know I have more Iām looking for, I just leave those types of one-offs. Itās the ones that only have a single movie ever made and it has its own collection that irk me. I just went through my collections, and cleaned it up again. Only had 2 of the 40 some odd collections that were truly one-off movies and never to have another added to the mix.
The lack of this feature is the only thing keeping me from buy a lifetime Plex Pass. Just sayinā.
Ok, so this is a featuer I would like as well. I noticed mention of a vote for this to be implemented - where do I vote?
All Pass members have access to a whole different section of the forums, including the Feature Requests forum. I guess itās a perk of being Pass holders. If someone isnāt a pass holder they just donāt see the forums at all.
For PASS holders the Feature Request forum is here: https://forums.plex.tv/categories/feature-bug-voting
Remember, though⦠If you are a Pass holder, you also have access to the post I have in the General (Pass) forum. This is where some very illuminating statements from @elan basically tell everyone there Feature Requests arenāt very high on the Teamās priorities⦠(Thatās also been linked to In this thread by @HitsVille .) Donāt hold your breath, in other words⦠
Plex gives almost ALL my movies a collection⦠most are just one movie in each collection⦠great work⦠makes things so much nicerā¦

As mentioned before, the collection info comes from TheMovieDB. Plex has no idea if the movie is a one-off or a single movie out of a series. It just uses the data provided. If you donāt want collection info automatically added, turn off that option in the agent settings. Either in the global setting for new libraries or in the library settings.

That seems odd. Can you start a new thread and provide screenshots from Web, PlexPy, and the XML?

If you want to manually add the collection info, you can use multi-select and add the collection info to all of the selected movies at once.

I agree that getting to the collections filters option does take quite a number of clicks. If you have specific suggestions (besides collapsing the posters into a single one) to make this easier, I can share it with the team.
OpenPHT is so far out in front of PMP they might never catch up at the rate they are going
Does OpenPHT do this? I havenāt kept up with their development.

Different strokes for different folks.
They have their advantages, and Plex has itās. At least to Plex, itās not a competition to out do the others.

Iām not blaming anyone, itās just the way the scanners work. Plex cannot control the information we get back. What do you expect Plex to do with this information?

This probably sounds like Rocket Science, but Plex could NOT ENABLE IT BY DEFAULT!
And while weāre at it: HOW ARE THINGS GOING WITH THOSE UNWANTED FAVORITE TRACKS IN MY MUSIC LIBRARY THAT KEEP SHOWING UP EVEN AFTER I TURN THEM OFF?!
What do I expect Plex to do with that? Fix it would be nice. Do I expect that will ever happen? Not really. That must be why Plex is so against User Options - itās hard to get them to work⦠apparently.

Itās switched on by default so itās a bit late when you have a few hundred dvds ripped to realise the car crash that collections is. What weād also like is Plex to create proper collections as requested numerous times.
As I say, standard response ānot our fault guv, we cant do anything about itā.
