Grouping xTeVe Tuner Channels into Categories on Live TV & DVR?

Server Version#: Synology 1.25.8.5663
Player Version#: Nvidia Shield (not sure of version number, 99% sure it is the latest)
Tuner Make/Model: xTeVe 2.2.0
Using XMLTV?: Yes
Channel number/Name: All

I need to know how to categorise channels from xTeVe on my NAS into Plex. I am getting conflicting information as to whether this is possible or not, so let me give some background and context.

I have two available Guide Sources, NAS and Plex Channels. All my NAS channels are in one list, whereas the Plex Channels are split into multiple categories.

When I include Plex Channels as a Guide Source, I get all sorts of categories with channels available by default on Plex. None of these channels I’m interested in, but the categories go someway to meet my needs. When I turn Plex Channels off as a guide source, I get only the channels from my NAS xTeVe tuner, but they’re still all grouped in one huge list, making navigation difficult. I’d like to separate these into Entertainment, Sports, News, Movies etc.

I see that the Plex Channels guide goes someway to do that, but when I set these categories in my xTeVe EPG, it doesn’t filter through to Plex - they just stay in one list.

Upon research, it seems that this simply isn’t supported… HOWEVER, Lon.Tv did a video recently showcasing this new Live TV/DVR feature, and you can clearly see, his NAS Tuner channels are actually mixed in with the correct categories. I would be happy with this as a solution, as I would then try to order the channels I’m interested in above the channels I’m not.

That video is here, go to 2:16 for the relevant part: New Plex Hybrid TV Guide How To - Combines Tuner & Free Streaming Content - YouTube

How do I replicate what he has here?

I have messed about with this for a while and it seems that if you use an external epg source (xmltv) it doesn’t separate the channels into the default categories within Plex live tv.

I have used xteve with Plex guide and the channels are sorted into categories.

I have also used xteve with various xmltv guides and doesn’t sort them into categories

I’ve also used freesat via my enigma2 box with Plex guide and again it sorts channels into the default categories on live tv.

Again if I try above with an xmltv guide it fails to sort into categories.

There is obviously something within the structure of the xmltv guides that doesn’t allow for the sorting process to happen. Or perhaps Plex only allows this to happen using their epg

I know that the Plex guide sorts categories based on what’s on channel at the time. Example bbc1 uk is an entertainment channel, but if football is on it will move the channel to the sport section…

Thanks Mike, not quite sure I like that last “feature” about it going into a category depending on what is on. I’m going to see if Plex Dev’s can look at this.
