Customisation of XMLTV Categories in Live TV & DVR

I would like to suggest that Plex implement the ability to put customise and configure XMLTV categories on the channel/EPG guide.

Current Behaviour

Currently, the Plex guide source is sorted into approx. 24 different categories.

However, this same categorisation is not available for imported XMLTV guides. Instead, they appear in one big list.

Problem Statement
The issue with this is, beside from not being very user friendly, is that it could take a long time to scroll and find the channels you want. The maximum list that can be imported into Plex is 480, so scrolling through 480 could be difficult.

It would also bring a consistent behaviour to the current way the Plex channels work and would just look cleaner, better organised, and more user friendly.

Observed Behaviour

There has been some observed behaviour where some XMLTV channels do go into categories, I got it working at one point, though recently for me this has not been reproduceable. However, even this was not ideal because this would mean that if a channel was playing a News program, that channel would go into the News section. If a football game followed on the same channel, that channel would then move into the Sports section. This meant that you had to have some idea on what kind of show would be airing on the channel at the given time you wanted to watch, to be able to have somewhat of a guess as to where exactly it would be.

Proposed Behaviour

I propose this two key elements of this feature. See Photoshopped mockups below for illustrative purposes.

  1. Allow users to create and manage their own categories

  2. Allow users to place channels into those custom categories

It could be considered that there are already a few preconfigured categories such as Entertainment, News, Sports, Kids etc

Workarounds attempted

Myself and others have tried to manipulate the XML files to “trick” Plex into placing channels into categories with no success. This included:

  • Adding a tag in the XML files
  • Using third party managers such as xTeVe and Threadfin which has it’s own category management
  • Using HD Home Run emulator.
  • Utilisng the channel “Favorites” feature, though this only produces a single list of favourites, and you can’t rename “Favourites” to “Sports” for example.

Conclusion
I am happy to go into more detail and act as a tester for any such feature. I really do hope this feature is seriously considered. As more and more people are starting to “cut the cord” and rely on XML solutions, this could only be yet another reason to consider Plex as the ultimate, all in one media solution.

Not to diminish your suggestion… there’s already a related suggestion asking for Plex to pick up the channel categories available in an XMLTV file (not quite the same as yours)

I know but I was advised to put in a full, detailed suggestion by a Plex employee so that’s what I’ve done…

I’m hoping this one gains some traction. So many people have described their wish for this in so many ways but ultimately I’m hoping my suggestion satisfies everyone.

I have barely touched the live TV features since I hardly receive any channels where I live, so I guess I do not understand this feature request.

But when I looked at live TV, Plex would automatically fill in program guide data for the channels detected by the tuner. I saw no provided workflow to use an alternative guide data source.

So while this is a fine idea it seems to be asking for official support something that isn’t an official feature. If I am mistaken, please 'splain it to me.

(The ability to add network video sources to Plex is actually the top of my personal wish list.)

You can quite officially add your own guide…

Cool, thanks. I missed it in the GUI so the OP was confusing.

If I had a vote left, I’d vote for it.

I totally agree. It’s quite inconvenient without categorization for Live TV. I assume it’s possible to add one’s own channels into Plex’s categories using the EPG Plex provides. However, Plex’s EPG is very limited, and many users in different regions can’t utilize it. They must resort to XMLTV. Yet, currently, using XMLTV doesn’t enable categorization functionality. This results in users who’ve added many channels being unable to smoothly navigate through them. We really need a feature for custom categorization.

I think plex are actually using the Gracenote Programme ID’s rather than specific category tags to sort the programmes in their guides. My XML files are tagged with programme catefgories and also with the Gracenote ID’s for each programme but Plex simply doesnt “look” for these so it doesnt sort programmes into categories. I’m sure for plex it would be easy enough to enable plex to check the xml files for xxxxx or “gracenoteID” but the problem with using “category” is that the variants of these could be limitless so I’m guessing its something they would rather keep constrained by using Gracenote guide info.

and this is what we want to see. an XMLTV implimentation of what plex does in their Guide already. If they could just scan the xml and generate dynamic filters based on programme category tags then that would be fine. just to be able to search for all programmes showing a sporting event for example without having to scroll through up to 480 channels checking each listing…
I have about 30 channels that can potentially show a football match and they arent all sports channels and grouped together. In the UK our OTA channels show a mix of programming styles/genres and so they could be showing anything from a soap opera to a documentary to a drama to a rugby match. if Plex could simply support xmltv categories then i could simply scroll across to the sports category and it would then show a guide consisting of all channels that are showing sport and then only the programmes that actually have sport as the programme category.
