My Samsung Smart TV recently begun acting up so I reinstalled the Plex app hoping that’d solve it. Unfortunately now I can’t sign into my Plex account anymore, so I have to connect to my server manually. The problem is that without a Plex account I can’t choose an user and my living room TV is being used exclusively by my parents. Apparently the default/“guest” user is sharing the settings/view history with my own user (server admin). Which is really annoying because content they’ve been watching is now tagged as “watched” on my (password protected) user.
The chances for an updated Plex app are probably low (last update was 2019) but would it be possible to have a proper guest user? It doesn’t really make sense that the main user and “guest” user share the same data and makes the password protection kind of useless.
You’ll need to provide some technical details of your setup (e.g. what version of PMS, what version of the Plex App… is this a Smart Hub or Tizen platform…).
After signing in with your credentials, you’re signed in with your main account – not a guest user. Therefore you’ll obviously see their watch history as your own.
The Plex app on my Samsung TV won’t show the four digits when trying to pair and just gets stuck when trying to sign in manually. The only option I have is to manually connect to my server.
I could tell you the TV model and app version but what would that accomplish? The TV is pretty old and the app hasn’t seen any updates in over a year.
It could help to pin down what error you experience… I certainly won’t force you to expose data you deem too sensitive.
You’re right. I shouldn’t be so uncooperative since you’re just trying to help
The real solution would be to fix the Samsung app but the guest account idea sounds only logical to me.
Model: SAMSUNG UE55ES7090
Firmware: T-ECPDEUC-2023.0
Plex: 2.013 (2019-09-17)
Hmmm… from what I could find, the recent change by Plex to no longer support outdated connections should only impact Samsung TV models with Plex version 1.x. Then again… no longer being able to sign into your account from the TV sounds a lot like that.
The SmartHub app had been maintained by a user who stopped developing it. Plex’ own Samsung app is only supported on from 2016 or newer models.
Your best shot might be to add some kind of streaming box to the TV – you could check out an entry-level Roku or Chromecast stick to keep the TV “alive” even if the native Plex app is giving you trouble.
Yeah, I figured as much. Cloudflare made a similiar decision recently which broke a bunch of Kodi apps.
Anyway, for my parents, just watching the content is enough. Could even do DLNA, they wouldn’t care. Still, I’d like to keep using Plex, meaning for my situation the app in its current form is “good enough”.
But it’d be nice if they could continue watching their stuff without interfering with my history, so the only thing I (personally) need is for Plex to start separating the default/guest/not-signed-in user from the main user/admin.
P.S. I wonder if I could MITM my TV and “force” the app to connect to your servers anyway. Maybe for another day
I had issue with my old Samsung TVs Plex app and have to use my Firestick on that TV. My newer TVs Samsung Plex App is working just fine. Odd how the old TV cant use the newer Apps.
