Guide Data Shows Incorrect Episode Number

The guide has been displaying episode numbers that are 3 greater than current for the show ‘The Young and the Restless’. For example, the show’s website ([https://www.cbs.com/shows/the_young_and_the_restless/]) says that today’s show was S47 E85, but the Plex Live TV Guide says S47 E88.

I’m running PMS 1.18.3.2156 with an over-the-air tuner and antenna in Boise, Idaho, 83706 US with guide data for ‘Broadcast TV Boise OTA Broadcast’.

This has been occurring with this program since I installed the server 26 December 2019. Other programs seem to be correct.

Is this a guide data issue or am I missing some configuration?

Most likely no configuration is missing. There are ongoing issues with the Plex DVR Guide having incorrect episode (and occasionally season) numbers. Comments in other forum threads suggest the new EPG provider Plex switched too is not providing accurate guide information.

This thread indicates a way to report guide issues. I have submitted several examples as outlined in the thread and never saw any corrections on the episodes submitted.

I found I was having to audit the TV guide so as not to miss new shows. The guide issues were so frequent I ended up switching to another EPG guide provider this past week.

Thanks for the link and the info. I’ll follow up there.

@WGR… Thank you Thank you Thank you… I thought I was going crazy having not seen any posts about this. I too have had to resort to manually auditing every recording to ensure that the episode number is correct. When they are wrong the filename always had the right episode name but the Episode number can be off by one, three or more. It’s getting quite annoying. EPG Data is not difficult to maintain. If I don’t audit them I then have episodes later not record as Plex thinks it already has it.

I also posted to the thread asking for corrections and never saw a response or correction. Hopefully they will sort this out, but until then the DVR functionality is unreliable.

If I can ask… what EPG data did you switch to that is giving you better results.

Cheers,

@Muldoono – no you were not going crazy. I was having new episodes not record and initially thought I had a configuration issue with Plex. It took me longer than it should have to figure out as you stated the episode name was right but the episode number (and several cases season) was wrong.

I followed the instructions in this forum post from 2018. Initially I wasn’t sure I wanted to change anything on the Plex setup. (Running Plex on headless Linux computer.) After having so many incorrect episodes listed in the DVR guide, decided to take a leap. The how-to post was a very good guide. Set it up and no issues so far (1 week) --more importantly all episodes have been correct.

Here’s a link to the how-to article and a Plex support article about the subject.

If you have issues trying this out, I may be able to help. Far from an expert but willing to try and help.

Thanks WGR… I’m going to have to look into this. I’m competent with Linux so it will just take me some time to digest. I figure I have to do something because just this week I found the following during my now mandatory audit):

  1. NCIS is listing as Season 17 Episode 13 - Flight Plan (it should be episode 12)
  2. Modern Family is listing as Season 11 Episode 14 - Legacy (it should be episode 11)
  3. Law & Order : SVU is listing as Season 21 Episode 19 - She Paints for Vengeance (it should be episode 11)

In all cases the episode name is right, but with a completely wrong episode number. I’m so glad that Plex “upgraded” us to a new EPG provider. Sometimes I wonder how they don’t get the basics right on there DVR. It needs to have accurate data guys. Duh!

Keep us posted on how your new EPG data is working out. I don’t want to switch if you find you’re getting similar issues down the road. And @Plex Admins… Fix you sh*t! As usual… You’re silent.

@muldono

I think you will be happy if you change. I’ve been using for about a week and no issues at all. All episodes have been identified correctly.

I have an old HTPC setup that I have been using for 10+ years. I was using software that was purchased and that had an EPG. In 10+ years never had any issues with the EPG being incorrect. In researching found the software was using zap2it. That persuaded me to try the switch to XMLTV quicker than I had originally planned. Very happy I did as now the DVR works as I hoped when I made the switch to Plex.

I agree with your comments on Plex and the new EPG provider. Would think if Plex is trying to grow their business, they would want to get the live TV / DVR portion right. If a new user tries it and finds out that recordings are missing because the episode guide is wrong, most will give up and not come back. The DVR was the reason I signed up.

Good Luck.

I’m sure this work around works fine for you, but should we even have to do this? The incorrect episode numbering is getting worse every week on Plex. I can’t imagine others aren’t running into this more often. I would expect the forum to be overflowing on this subject, but it appears they are not.

It’s because a lot of people have given up over the last nine months. Errors are reported and rarely fixed by air time.
