Hard drive crashed, Plex sees external drive but won't drill into folders with new SSD

Server Version#: Version 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: Version 3.83.1

I had to replace the drive in the laptop I used as a PMS. I followed the guides I had used before (created a mount point, etc) to auto mount my external drive. When creating a library, the drive shows up, but the media folders for the libraries do not.The drive is owned by root. The permissions for the drive are read write execute for owner, group and others - drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8192 Jan 17 16:11 MEDIA_BACKUP.

When I try to change the ownership of the drive, I get this confusing message:
chown -R michael MEDIA_BACKUP
chown: changing ownership of ‘MEDIA_BACKUP/.Trash-999/files/.Trash-1000/files/Season 1.2/The Good Karma Hospital - S01E03 - Episode 3.mkv’: Input/output error

I am stuck. Thank you for your help.

I am stuck.

Additionally,

What you are seeing is the “Trash Bin”. Those entries are there but there is no matching file.
You have no real choice but to drop (empty) the trash

Perfect! This is just what I needed. Up and running now.

Nota Bene (to me in the future): If there is already an fstab entry for drive in media, comment it out or computer will not boot.

Hi,

I have had a similar type of issue with my external hard drive that I use for all Plex media that is on the server.
I have Windows 10 and a 4TB Samsung external hard drive. With irregular frequency the playback on remote devices stops, on checking the folders on my external hard drive it shows empty folders without any files.
I have to switch off the external drive and when I switch it back on everything in the folders is visible again and Plex works fine again.
There is no real pattern to how often this happens, I have gone about 2 months without it happening and now I updated to the latest version and had the same issue again.
It is frustrating as I use Plex on mobile devices and if the external drive is “kicked off” I am not physically at the computer to be able to restart the drive.

This has been going on for about a year and I have searched for an answer online and never found anything to help.

Any help on correcting this?

Thanks
Billy
