Does the payed version of plex support hardware acceleration on the Mac mini (M4 chip set)?
yes. but it can only encode one at a time. https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware-accelerated-streaming/#toc-3
I don’t think that’s (single hardware-accelerated encode) the case anymore (and hasn’t been for a while). This is from my M2 MacBook Air:
This is two encodes to H.265, but I’ve tested to H.264 as well. (I did this previously on an Intel-based Mac as well.)
You’re probably right. I’ll ask that our support doc get updated
So would buying the upgraded plex provide me any benefit? In my home network, sometimes I run into speed issues for higher quality streaming off of my stored movies. I thought hardware acceleration would help….with the prices going up, I wondered if I should buy the lifetime since I use a Mac.
I mean you do need the PP if you want to use hardware acceleration. It sounds like a transcode will help. Hardware Acceleration makes a transcode more efficient.
You could always just get a monthly PP to try it out to see if it helps for your situation. if it works then get the Lifetime or if not just cancel renewal and let it expire.
The doc hasn’t been updated, macos can take just one or more video for HW transcoding at a time ?
