I have discovered with a number of 4k videos that a transcode is needed for the subtiltes as it seems some of the better subtiles on 4k always need serverside transcode even when using the nvidia shield. This totally killed my current server and i planned to upgrade it anyway but then i discovered that there is no pages that talk about 4k to 4k transcode needed for subtitles only 4k to 1080p and i assume 4k to 4k needs more grunt.
I have a few options with my new server of a ryzen 5950x i have spare or getting a new intel CPU as well as buying a new GPU like the A2000 or A4000 but i just have no idea what is needed to burn subtiles on 4k video.
most of my content is 1080p and i only expect a max of 2 streams of the 4k the need subtitles burnt and even if it was just one stream that would likely be fine as long as a few other non 4k could be done at the same time.
I have not seen more that 5 concurrent streams on my server.
i use the shield pro as client and i have tons of 4k bluray remuxes with SRT . i never need to transcoding the subs the shield just add them on screen still direct playing the file ,IMO stay away from ASS sub they sometimes give more problem than advantages ,rather then that a 4K transcode to 4k i know is the copy process or direct stream for
example when u play a dovi remux on a hdr10 only display the remuxes has the hdr10 fall back so its copy that video stream rather then transcoding a new one
as far as i know VOBSUB and PGS subtitles will require the video to be transcoded to “burn in” the subtitles for streaming
and i believe for any 4k transcode with HW still stand the 17000 passmark to calculate the theorical cpu load while transcoding 4k content
i hope i helped u even just a bit
@marci87 yea it does. In my case i have noticed it is normally ASS subs that i find on the 4k files when there are problems so was hoping to have hardware that could handle it when it does need to be handled. I have converted them to SRT to work around it a few times but really prefer a hands off automated setup as much as possible so if hardware is the answer i am happy to go that route.
