Hardware Encoding no longer working - all software updated

Server Version#:4.128.1

I am running Plex Server on a Linux Mint system with an AMD A8-7500 and an Nvidia GTX 960. For quite some time after setting it up, and subscribing to Plex Pass to enable hardware encoding, everything was working well. My 1440p and 4K video files would stream at 1080 no problem.

However recently, this stopped working. I would get terrible stuttering no matter the client I used. I logged into my server and updated everything - all drivers, all software, and updated Plex to the newest version. still no luck.

I turned on the system monitor as I stream a higher quality video, and the CPU usage spikes. I checked the settings and I still have Hardware acceleration turned on, and I can even see my GTX 960 in the dashboard under “Hardware Transcoding Device”. But still, the CPU is being tasked with transcoding, and it isn’t even slightly up to the task.

I’m at the end of my rope, google searches aren’t helping. My annual Plex Pass renews in 15 days and I don’t know if it’s worth renewing, as the ONLY feature I use is Hardware Transcoding.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

If I may add to Otto,

This type of problem " It works – then , without reason, stops working " is regrettably “Classic Mint”

I can’t count how many times I’ve sat with the customer (shared desktop) and typed commands (getting correct results) then, without warning, those same commands returned different results as we tested something else.

  1. It’s an ok, light duty, desktop-only / workstation machine for those learning Linux
AND accept they will need to reinstall Ubuntu, Debian, or a Redhat variant for meaningful Plex server use.

  2. It’s proven time & time again to fail under the load of running a media server
(everything from inexplicable application termination / bad results to Kernel Panics)
