I have a Plex server on a Win10 PC and it has been fine for years. Now when I play certain shows or movies, the server immediate crashes and closes.
I am running version 1.41.8.9834
What do I need to do to get help with troubleshooting. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling already.
How do we get support from Plex for fixes? My Plex server crashes every time I play certain files that historically played fine. Is there a paid support line or something?
All the new stuff I add to Plex works but when I play my older shows, my Plex server just crashes. The icon on in the taskbar just disappears. I have to restart Plex to work. I tried converting one of the episodes to a mp4 and it works though. How do I get help with this???
Did these issues start to appear when you got your Plex Pass?
If so, then the first thing you should try is to disable Hardware transcoding in the server settings.
I’ve had the Plex Pass for years and never had issues with any movies/shows playing. Now when I play some of my older shows, the server completely crashes.
I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, rebuilding the database, etc.
The only thing that worked was converting the MKV show to a mp4. I have thousands of files that are MKV though…
Have you tried to disable hardware transcoding?
Please post a mediainfo of one such affected file, as well as one from a converted, working mp4.
Please also add detail which playback devices and apps you are using.
Omg, thank you so much. When I uncheck “Use hardware-accelerated video encoding” everything works… So why is that? I still have “Use hardware acceleration when available” checked. Is it still helpful to have mediainfo? I am just playing these videos on the actual Plex Serve itself, so on Windows 10 through Chrome.
Was “Enable HEVC video Encoding (experimental)” also enabled?
If so, disable that and re-enable “Use hardware-accelerated video encoding”. See if that also crashes.
No, there are three options, Never, HEVC Only, or Always. Mine was set to Never.
OK, anyway, it must have been something with your GPU or the QuickSync unit in your CPU (if you have Intel).
What GPU/CPU is in your server machine?
No GPU but I have a Intel i7-8700k CPU
I’d check if the device driver for the Intel embedded graphics adapter has been installed and is up-to-date.
Use the one manually downloaded from the Intel website, not what Windows update is installing automatically.
What does the:
“Use hardware-accelerated video encoding”
Actually do? Is it really recommended to figure out how to turn this on or is it ok leaving it off?
It is supposed to save CPU power. On low-power CPUs this can make the difference between being able to transcode or not at all.
Or maybe being able to transcode more video streams at once.

I updated my intel drivers and was able to re-activate the setting.
Thank you so much for the help!
