Hardware renew - New Linux Server

HyHo!

My current server hp proliant 580 gen5 a monster but his time is over.
(19", 4x Xeon X7350 @ 2.93GHz, 16 cores, Ubuntu Server, 80TB RAID-6).

But, from my point of view, a new server make sense with hardware transcoding.
So the plan is. Keeping the DL380/DL580 Plattform for keeping the raid controller but some generations newer. Gen 8 or 9.

Question:
How mutch CPU Power i need with working GPU transcoding.
Is GPU transcoding currently working on linux? I remember some newsletter with the headline “now with working GPU transcoding under linux”.

thx,
hansen

I’m running with an Intel Core i5-7400 @3Ghz and 8GB RAM with no GPU and have no issues what so ever. Video post processing and any needed transcoding does spike CPU a little, but never enough to cause us any slowdowns.

In the settings I have transcoder set to auto quality and fast background preset.

I don’t have any 4k stuff. Max video quality on my setup is 1080p and can run 5+ simultaneous streams off it with no issues.

Okay, may i have to axplain. The CPU load is currently near by max with 3-4 concurrend users in 1080p.

Are they all transcoding on the fly? That seems strange. What is/are the client(s) you using? I’m using an Android TV box for two main TVs, my Android 8 phone and tablet and only a few things transcode, most runs direct play.

Thats different. Mostly Android based, some Sony Playstation, some Apple-TV.

I also realise that the responsetime of this server web-GUI is too low. Then somehow I expected more.
And so… its a Gen5 DL580… needs a lot of power.

So i think about a new server. And in this case why not spending 500.- for a hardware transcoding GPU (Gforce P2000) instead of a bigger server.
