My old HP 580 gen5 4-CPU monster is old… HP gen5… and the CPU load is up to 70% by using 3 users on tge server with transcoding. Currently running under ubuntu 16.04
So i plan a new server, ubuntu again but under 18.04.
So… my question is. Can i reduce the cpu power by using a gpu assistence?
I dare to remember that this gpu assistence was planned or implemented for Linux. Unfortunately, I can not find any clear documentation on the subject.
Currently, Emphasis on currently, the only HW assist which comes with Plex is for those CPUs with Intel QSV (Quick Sync Video) support. CPUs more than a few years old won’t have it.
Eventually, there will be integrated support for external GPU cards. This is still a work in progress due to all the variants and combinations involved.
This is true only for the linux PMS, correct? I was under the impression that PMS on Windows currently supports NVEnc with or without Intel QSV CPU extensions / capability… am I mistaken?
I’m awaiting clarification from Chuck (see below), but I thought this was supported on Windows…
In any event, you’re probably a veteran PMS user and already know this, but I didn’t until I asked. Apparently, the Plex client for most platforms defaults to 2 Mbps for internet streaming. If your clients have enough bandwidth (20 Mbps+), you could instruct them to change their “Internet Streaming” settings to maximum and avoid transcoding altogether… just a thought.
You caught me just before going to bed (and on the weekend )
Yes, this is true of Linux. (we are in the Linux forum)
Not all clients default to 2 Mbps. They only default to 2 Mbps **If Remote Access isn’t enabled correctly. 2 Mbps is the Plex Pass Indirect speed limit. Otherwise the device (Player) will play at whatever bitrate is necessary for the selected resolution and video within the maximum specified by the admin in Settings - Network
@ChuckPa Good deal, I knew this was a question directly about linux, just wanted to make sure my impression was correct for Windows$… or else I’d have to re-think my strategy
@frauhansen this bodes well for you, as support for linux must not be that far away (crossing fingers)
I swear I learn something new nearly every time I visit this forum! I engaged another Plex team member about the 2 Mbps setting, but I didn’t gather from that discussion that the setting was only imposed due to my (stipulated) server / firewall / router mis-configuration. That’s actually really good news, as I’ll not repeat the same mistakes again… and therefore won’t need to instruct my users to change anything going forward
