Hardware transcoding on DS720+ versus DS723+

Hehe, ok, thanks  Then I’ll get myself a NUC with 13th gen intel when they arrive and a Netgear switch with at least 4 ports.

Just out of curiosity: What other things have you connected to the switch? I might get some interesting ideas.

Edit: Reread the top posts on using a 9th gen processor. it sounds to me like that’s a better choice then. It just feels bad buying old hardware

The NUC way will be very nice, i can confirm. Switched to a NUC for Plex along with a Synology as NAS. Both conntected with an own gigabit ethernet switch. There was no issue in the last 4 years.

Regarding I7, I9, 10th, 11th gen NUC, it may depend on the amount of concurrent users you want to serve. But maybe all the mentions here are a bit overscaled.

For example, a 8th gen I3 NUC can handle 5-6 concurrent fullHD x264 and x265 transcodings without any hassle, even 2 4K HVEC transcodes were no problem here. In fact the only thing needed is the Intel QuickSyncVideo engine in the video hardware, I have not seen the I3 going higher than 25% load.
If this suits you needs, you could get an older gen NUC for maybe 250 bucks.
But sure, a beefy fresh NUC will be nice.

I have have the following connected

  1. Router from the internet (pfsense)
  2. WiFI AP (2.5 GbE)
  3. Onkyo AVR
  4. Shield Pro 2019
  5. AppleTV 4K
  6. 2x QNAP NAS (1x 10GbE)
  7. 3x Syno NAS (6x 1 GbE)
  8. Thecus NAS
  9. Main NAS (2x 10 GbE)
  10. WorkStation NUC (10GbE)
  11. 3x testbed ESXi NUCs (3x5 GbE, 3x 1GbE)
  12. EDIT: 2x Roku

On the rack in my office.

(added another NUC8i7HVK since this pic)

Haha, that’s sick  I probably won’t end up with the same rack.

It sounds like it’s not a problem to get a 13th gen barebone, then. I’m in the middle of moving now, so I can wait a bit.

Thanks a lot for your feedback on this! Really helpful

If you ever want to see insanity, I’ll share my server build… hahahahahahahahaha
