Hardware Transcoding on P2000 not working

I recently bought a Quadro P2000 so i can take advantage of the Hardware Transcoding Feature. I installed the card in my server, downloaded the Quadro Drivers from the NVIDIA Website and enabled the feature in Plex. Im running PMS on Windows Server 2016.

When i try to play something it clearly states 1080p(hw) > 720p(hw) but i barely see any performance difference. I can confirm this by trying to transcode a 4K movie. AFAIK the P2000 should be able to handle this no problemo. My stream keeps beffering.

Here are my Log files; https://www.dropbox.com/s/1wz6x76878xbn5k/Plex%20Media%20Server.log?dl=0

Am i doing something wrong? Maybe im just missing something very obvious.

Thanks.

I have a quandro p2000 as well, and I’ve seen a massive performance difference. CPU utilization is about 5-10% with many streams transcoding.

What CPU do you have?

Did you make your quandro card your primary display in the bios settings? If you have that option… A lot of times there’s a init first type option for built in graphics, or pcie, you’ll want to choose pcie.

Plex uses whatever is the default graphics adapter. So set the PCI-E adapter as default like Cguy said.

My Quadro is the primary GPU. I set the BIOS to PCIE. MY CPU is a 4790k. I know that the 4790k cant do HEVC hardware transcoding, but i dont think thats needed if the P2000 is doing the heavy lifting.

Also something i find very interessting, the moment i press play the GPU usage goes up to about 15%. The CPU idles at about 5% which to me looks like Plex is just confused or not outputing whatever it is transcoding on the card.

You are correct the gpu will do all the heavy lifting. But the cpu is still used a little. If your gpu is at 15% and cpu at 5% as you say that sounds like the card is doing the transcoding. What makes you think it isn’t?

There must be a error somewhere since 4K HEVC doesnt playback at all and h264 stuff takes longer to load as CPU only. Im gettinf nowhere here or on reddit so i decided to install W10/Linux on a seperate ssd to see if it has something to do with Windows Server 2016.

Sounds like a good idea. Report back with what happens.

I have found that when changing the HW acceleration or any transcoding options you must stop and restart PMS for anything to actually change.

So i put Windows 10 on my box and turns out, it works. Idk why it doesnt work in Windows Server 2016. My original plan was to run Linux VM inside Windows Server 2016 but this turns out to be a pain in the ass. Native Linux doesnt work for me since im using Storage Spaces.

Anyway im sticking with Windows 10 for now.

Glad you were able to figure this out… It would be nice if the hardware worked within a VM but many people seem to say that it doesn’t. YMMV
