Hardware Transcoding on Synology Platform

This is a duplicate to the one in the feature request forum so the non plex-pass users can express their support for the feature.

I’ve had a talk with Synology about opening up hardware transcoding on their platform to Plex. This was their response.

“Regarding hardware transcoding through Plex, we have actually been communicating with Plex for a long time about whether they can implement this. However, it might be because Plex supports too many types of devices and it’ll take up a lot of their resources to optimise the software for each device (I’m not 100% sure), this just hasn’t happened yet. There are other third-part app that has utilised hardware trascoding on Synology NAS, so we are not hiding the secret from anyone, especially not Plex.”

The DS415+, the new DS916+ support hardware offloading of transcoding tasks on the NAS. To give you some idea of the benefits, currently doing a low bandwidth 1080p transcode on the 916+ uses about %90 CPU. The same video in the Synology video station uses %30 CPU. This is a massive difference in performance.

There literally a hundred thousand people who would benefit from having this feature supported in Plex. I realise it may not be a road you want to travel but if you change your mind. Please let Synology be your testing platform. I for one would only be too happy to use my DS415+ as a test platform for code. I am chasing up Synology for more information on how to utilise the hardware in the current version of disk station manager (DSM).

Fingers Crossed.

Here am I: another available beta tester with DS916+ waiting for hardware acceleration for Plex pass (without I can’t manage the streams for all the family so I use the NAS integrated player).

What I find compelling about QNAP hardware platform is a few things. … I’m curious as to whether the hardware transcoding would work

I have a Synology NAS and am currently not using Plex because they don’t support hardware transcoding for the DS916+. I’m very interested in Plex’ functionalities and would buy a lifetime PlexPass, but I will definitely not move to another NAS producer only to use Plex. Let’s hope you’ll change mind and add hardware transcoding in the close future for Synology DS916+

Same here. +1 for Hardware transcoding on ds916+. It would make a world of difference since my NAS is always maxing out the ressources on certain files.

Love the features of Plex too and would definitely buy plex pass if HW transcoding were to be implemented. Just like above i can’t use the plex pass without it.

Same here, a DS916+ user that can not use Plex because 4k transcoding is not working. If this situation continues I will not renew my Plex Pass because I’m not using it :(((

I have a qnap NAS with intel CPU and i would love to have hardware support for transcoding.
The NAS is not powerfull enough for some files with Plex at the moment. With hardware support it will be able to manage any file even 4k I guess.
Please consider implemeting hardware support for all NAS with Intel CPUs
Thanks

Interesting but unfortunately we don’t have access to this thread as it is for Plex Pass users only… Would you know if there are any positive updates for the DS916+ in that thread?

I’m impressed that I can run 4 streams at the same time… and the CPU is only around 50%. I’m running mine thru docker, and it seems to be working fine on my DS916+.

Hardware transcoding doesn’t work yet on DS918+?
support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/115002178853-Using-Hardware-Accelerated-Streaming
Plex server: Synology DS918+ running DSM 6.1.4 update 5
Plex server version: 1.11.0.4633

Please give Plex server MPEG2 transcoding hardware acceleration support for DS418play! This will make ripping DVD libraries in the fraction of the time of converting them to H.264 codec. Weeks and months saved for each user.
