Hardware Transcoding on TrueNAS 12.0

Server Version#: 1.20.3.3483 on TrueNAS 12.1-RELEASE-p10
Player Version#: 1.21.0
Server Processor: i5-4570, Q87 Chipset

I’ve been trying to get Hardware Transcoding working in my TrueNAS 12.1-RELEASE-p10 jail Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get it to work. I’ve been using https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/activating-plex-hardware-acceleration.75391 for most of my troubleshooting. @kegobeer-plex has reported what I believe to be a similar issue in post #250.

While I believe I have successfully configured passthrough for my iGPU, I cannot seem to get Plex to recognize that the hardware is available. I am using the script in post #17, with tunables loading drm and i915kms:

The current status of my jail is as follows:

  • Both DRI and DRM directories are available to the jail.
  • Plex is a member of video (GID 44).
  • libva-intel-driver-2.4.1 is installed.
  • Plex reports that a hardware decode accelerator is not present.

I can confirm this problem as well. This appears to be an issue with Plex as drm and dri are visible to the jail but are not being acknowledged by Plex. I can also confirm this used to work in the past.

EDIT: nevermind a plugin update for some reason caused Plex to get kicked from the video group. Working for me now.

I am having issues with Truenas as well…

HW encoding works occasionally. Then it locks up and nothing transcodes at all.

Jail cannot be stopped at all.

Reboot of entire server required to get it to work again.

My particular issue has been resolved.

The Q87 motherboard on my OptiPlex 9020 will not activate the iGPU on my i5-4570 without a display or dummy emulator connected.
