Hardware transcoding with 12th Gen Intel on windows server 2022

Server Version 1.32.8.7639
Player Version 4.116.1 (Plex Web)

I just changed my server and replaced a very old cpu with an i3-12100 and i was having hope it would be enought to handle most transcode scenarios (even in the av1 years to come) but i’m facing mixed results.

Tests done monitoring apu in arc control :

  • play 4k av1 content on plex web: transcode with cpu and struggle
  • play 4k hdr hevc content on plex web: transcode with cpu and struggle
  • play 4k hevc content on plex web: transcode with gpu/media and works fine
  • force transcode of h264 content: trancode with gpu/media and works fine

This gpu is supposed to decode av1 and i can at least play av1 on youtube on the server seeing gpu/media activity in arc control.
Is there something i’m missing to use all this apu transcode capabilities ?

Other key config informations:

  • CPU: Intel i3-12100
  • No extra GPU installed
  • Windows server 2022
  • windows install with PMS
  • Transcode temp folder is on a local folder on a SSD
  • Option: Enable HDR tone mapping
  • Option: Disable video stream transcoding
  • Option: Use hardware acceleration when available
  • Option: Use hardware-accelerated video encoding
  • simultaneous transcodes is set to unlimited
  • Hardware transcoding device : Intel(R) UHD Graphics 730
  • Intel driver installed : 31.0.101.4972

Hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but that processor is not going to do much hardware 4K transcoding. It gets a passmark of 13,500 and you need about a 17,000 passmark score to transcode 4K.

What kind of CPU do I need for my server

Also, no point enabling HDR tone mapping, as Intel iGPUs aren’t supported on Windows yet (if ever). So that will have to utilize software to be able to do tone mapping.

Do you have better results disabling both the Hardware Acceleration settings in transcoding content. Looks like it will all have to go through the software, even your non-4K content, unless you convert/optimize all of it to 1080p.

You’re probably going to need to look at upgrading your CPU to at least an i5 to have any luck transcoding 4K content, and depending if you stick with the 12th gen core processors, only 1 4K stream concurrently at that. Look at this table to see what processor will score highly enough and still be compatible with your system (if you can still buy a 12th gen): CPU Benchmark Scores

Alternatively, if you have the budget, capacity, and components to fit one, look at a low powered Nvidia GPU, like the A2000. I don’t know what else would fit that description and be under $500, but you might have to look at replacing a lot of components, and I’m sure you don’t want to do that.

Lastly, Linux supports Intel iGPU HW HDR tone mapping, but your still going to run into issues with the processing power needed to transcode 4K files.

Thank you for the feedback
In the end i was mislead because i can decode 4k av1 content in the browser with not that big stress one the gpu and even less when i encode h264…i had wrong hopes it could handle both for at least one stream.
It remains strange to me chrome on youtube can use my apu in ways plex can’t.

You’re not alone in feeling deceived by what the hardware manufactures claim their products can do. Also Plex isn’t very forthcoming with what hardware they support - you only find out about these issues when you search for answers to a problem you’re experiencing.

I’m not a software engineer by a long stretch, but I think Chrome has an AV1 encoder (decoder as well maybe, posssibly I have this in reverse), that makes the codec natively play on the web browser. If you tried playing it on a non-Chromium based web browser using the Plex web app, does the video play? I would suspect it would not and suffer what you were experiencing with streaming to other devices, but if it does that would be interesting to know.

What? Hardware transcoding will work fine, other than HDR-SDR as you said. Sure, it doesn’t have enough CPU for transcoding much in software, but hardware will work fine.

But they are on Windows with intel intergrated graphics. Hardware transcoding is not supported for that.

Yes, it is. The only thing that is not supported is HDR-SDR tone mapping in hardware. It will happily do regular 4k HDR transcoding or 4k SDR transcoding. Your statement that you cannot do 4k transcoding on that CPU is just wrong.

My apoligies it’s late here, but yep you’re right, I mentioned it earlier and misread what you wrote. But it’s the tone mapping that isn’t supported.

As for the processor transcoding from 4K HDR or SDR, I didn’t mean that you can’t transcode it at all, but doing so with a high bitrate 50mbps+ file, streaming in real-time, will be difficult at best. It’s a good modern processor, nothing wrong with it, I’m just coming at it from the observation the poster made with their own hardware and their experience transcoding with hardware acceleration enabled already. There possibly is something preventing streaming that is external to the CPU, but I don’t have any extra information on their system and network.

If that processor should transcode 4K with hardware on, why isn’t it working as expected? I’m hoping that we or someone else can help fix the issue.

I cannot tell enough from the options OP has listed. It appears in the first two that are not working it is using software to transcode. But transcode to what? What are the media details? How is the client (Plex web) set to playback? Are subtitles involved? Too many questions. As for the last two options, it appears to be using hardware transcoding and is playing fine. Again, though, without media details, this is not a real test.

Sorry if infos are missing. Now that you say it, details matters.

The av1 file is also HDR in fact.

It doesn’t use the gpu with or without subtitle in eac (not dolby)

Just as a test, I fired up Brave (I don’t use Chrome, but Brave is derived from chromium) to play a 4k HDR HEVC file. It transcoded to 1080p SDR and the audio to AAC stereo. It was not smooth and the server reported buffering frequently. I verified it was using hardware accelerated transcoding and the CPU was around 5-20% roughly (4 cores to pretty low usage). I will have to go through logs to figure out why this was happening, but it was not a hardware performance issue from what I can tell. I was able to play the same file in Plex on the same laptop and it was fine, though it direct played to the plex app.

I don’t use a browser as a client frequently at all, so I am not nearly as familiar with how Plex and a browser interact.

@rodgr What motherboard are you using? Just curious.

@kd6icz i’m using a rog strix b760-i

Everything direct play on a pc with plex app.
My problem is more usage elsewhere : tv with lg app or shield, tablette or phone with android
There i see same behavior than in browser so i used it as an example

My point was that I could duplicate the same issue you saw, but it was not because the server was failing to transcode the server due to CPU load. The CPU was nearly idle during playback, even during the transcode session. You are saying you cannot DP the file to an Nvidia Shield, though? I don’t use an Android device for Plex, but is the Android app using the chrome engine for playback?

What do the logs say when you try to play on another device, like the TV? I’m just wondering if it is something to do with your network setup. Also, are these devices on the same network? Do you use a VPN on your PC or on the devices your using, or on the router itself? Have you allowed Plex through on you PCs firewall and set your network from public to private? Do you uses upnp for port forwarding or do it manually on your router? Does your router have any firewall protection built in that may be affecting it? Does your router have QoS enabled?

Also are you using the 32-bit or 64-but version of Plex Media Server?

My nas is linked to tv/shield with wired gigabit ethernet and the phone / tablet use wifi 5 or 6E. Everything is on same network, there is no vpn/vlan or anything like that.
QoS and UPNP are actvited on my router and i also use manual port forwarding.
There is firewall on the router and also windows one on the nas.
I will check plex server and the logs when i’m at home (i doubt it’s 32 bit but i’m not sure).

Thank for the attention to my case !!

edit : plex is 64bit confirmed

No worries, happy to help! Hopefully we can sort this. I’ll have a crack at it anyway.

By this, do you mean that your NAS is directly connected to your shield/TV by an ethernet cable, or is your NAS plugged into your router and your Shield/TV are also plugged into that router? Sorry for being pedantic with the questions, just trying to get a visualization of your setup.

I have heard that UPnP can cause issues with Plex(?), but I would assume it is router dependent and would affect all programs relying on it. Unless you have another program that relies on UPnP port forwarding without the ability to port forward it manually, try turning it off on the router and also in Plex’s settings, in the “Remote Access” section, tick/check “manually specify public port” and set that to 32400. This might only affect remote streaming but worth a try. Keep manual port forwarding on on your router for port 32400 for the IP connected to your NAS, but it sounds like you have already done that so that’s good. Just a quick question, have you made the private/local IP address for your NAS static through DHCP on your router?

Also disable QoS, as I have had problems with that in the past. Again might only affect remote access but worth a try to see if anything resolves.

Just a reminder - I was able to duplicate OPs experience when using a Chrome-based web browser. That part is most likely not to be network related but closer to a PMS issue or a browser-based client issue. That may not be the only problem, but it is a wrinkle to it.

Here a log section after i launch a file not using the gpu
