Hardware upgrade for hardware acceleration?

I have a Desktop with Linux as a server for Plex, and i want to buy premium to enable HW acceleration, but i don’t know if the specs are good enough.

At the moment i have these:
AsRock h110m-itx
Intel Celeron G3900 2.8GHz
4GB ram

Given that i will buy 4GB more of ram, should i buy a more powerful processor (was thinking about i3 8100) or a dedicated GPU (in which case, what model)?

I would not want a celeron these days (or even 5 years ago).

You may well end up needing a more CPU with more raw compute power in the end, but I’d give this one a go to start. The Celeron G3900 has Intel HD Graphics 510 (Gen9) and, being Skylake based, supports up to 8-bit HEVC decode and encode via Quick Sync hardware acceleration. Where this processor falls down is raw compute speed (only two cores at 2.8 GHz) so transcoding tasks which can’t be handed off to the iGPU could strain the system (think burned-in subtitles here).

I already have that processor, and i know its not enough for hw trancoding. The question is should i upgrade only the cpu or should i add a gpu too?

So you’re saying that i should start with upgrading the cpu? Then if it’s not enough buy a gpu too?

Really depends on what file types you are using as well. are these going to be simple MP4 files or more like BR rips? I’d get the best that you can obviously.

Mostly BD rips, so pretty much 1080p stuff. But on average it will be only 1 or 2 devices streaming simultaneously. If there are more im ok with the quality going down

No, I’m suggesting that you test with your existing CPU first. Its integrated graphics core supports hardware accelerated decoding/encoding up to HEVC (though not 10-bit HEVC). If that proves to be insufficient for your needs, you can either upgrade the CPU or add a dedicated GPU.

I already tested it, but it’s not capable to stream in 1080p even to only one device. What i wonder is if it’s more efficient to add a gpu or upgrading the cpu

Did you try it with hardware acceleration enabled? Your forum handle doesn’t show an active Plex Pass which is required to use hardware acceleration. What I’m suggesting is that, once you have a Plex Pass and enable hardware acceleration, test with your existing CPU. If you’ve already done this, carry on.

Yeah, i tried it with the free subscription for a month (it just ended a couple days ago)
