Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650 on Linux

Howdy!

I am looking at getting cable again because I am moving and there are some good deals for new subscribers. I would love to get a CableCARD turner so I can run through Plex, but it seems like most people have given up on this.

I was really looking forward to the HDHR Prime 6, but that really seems dead in the water. So I have been looking at the Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650. Only problem is I run a Linux server (centOS 8) and all threads I’ve found (like this one) are running on Windows.

Is there anyone that runs a Linux server and one of these tuners? Do I just need a Windows machine to get the firmware updated? Can I then just plug the USB into my server?

If this isn’t going to work semi-easily (I don’t mind some tinkering), then I’ll just stick with OTA when I move.

Thanks!

The biggest item overlooked with tuners is udev.

User plex, not being privileged on Linux, must be a member of the group which owns the tuner (set by any custom drivers -or- in /etc/udev/rules.d)

LAN tuners need to be in the same subnet and the firewall (if active) needs to allow the traffic.

Thanks for the info. I realize the tuner I’m looking at isn’t a supported tuner so I appreciate you taking the time!

Hi,
I just picked up the Hauppuage WinTV-DCR-2650 yesterday. I was successful getting to work on centOS 8. What I did was first got it running on a Windows 10 machine getting it updated. I did however discover the self activation of the MCard failed with my cable provider (Spectrum/Time Warner). This required a call to support where I had to provide the Host ID and Data ID. This is when I discovered this device acts like a USB Ethernet interface. I opened a browser to the IP address of the device (in my case 192.168.84.97), went to CableCARD Menu -> CableCARD pairing to get the required information. At this point the WinTV-DCR-2650 was working. I then moved the WinTV to the centOS 8 machine. On the centOS I had to go into the network settings and configure/enable the USB Ethernet interface. I also had to go into the firewall and enable the interface. Once that was completed, went into Plex -> tools -> Live TV &DVR and added the WinTV by clicking on the “Enter its IP address manually”. From there I just followed the prompts. For the most part it is working great, just trying to understand why some channels aren’t decoding…
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info! I ended up not getting cable TV at my new place because I didn’t want to risk it with the tuner not working. Glad to know it does work (for at least some channels it sounds like). Perhaps I will add cable again in the near future!!!
