Plex Media Server for HD Live Channels is a Joke

So tired of working on this. I have a very good computer with 16 gigs of ram Intel 5 processor, only pms running on it I am the only one using it for testing purposes yet it continues to buffer and pause and just screw up the HD channels. It’s not a network issue it does it on the computer it is on. It’s not a TV signal issue WinTV10 works perfectly. What did I pay my 120$ for? So I said ok. Maybe the Ubuntu version will work. Nope it won’t detect the Hauppauge 4 tuner device. I said well maybe someone else had this problem I’ll check the forum. Sure enough someone did. Only He didn’t get his question answered either. You know there should be some requirements for people who write software for support. I run a wireless ISP if I just left a customer hanging I would be out of business. If anyone can shed any light on these subjects please do. Frustrated and not very happy. Jason

Jason,

Are you in Windows or Linux? You have both tagged?

I support Linux; don’t know or even have Windows.

If you are using Linux —

  1. Linux will require PCIe drivers based on what I’ve seen for other boards. Are they installed?
  2. As part of the installation of those drivers, there should be something about the ‘udev’ and ‘group’ information it’s assigned to. Has user plex been added to that group?

I have both installed on two different hard drives. Right now I’m working on the linux version. You have to assign plex to a group… No there wasn’t anything in the instructions about that. It had me do some sudo commands which i did. I checked and the usb haupppauge devices are listed.\

ok. Run this please? dpkg -l | grep udev

Which “instructions” so I can follow along with you?

Sorry chuck I had to leave the office I’ll try to walk through it with you later. It looks like what you’re talking about affects the hard drive and what can access the files. Just to be clear my problem is PMS is not seeing the Happauge TV tuner. It may need permission as well I’m not sure. I fallowed the steps on the Hauppauge Ubuntu install page.

dpkg -l | grep linux-image-generic-hwe

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:b-rad/kernel+mediatree+hauppauge
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-hwe-mediatree

Close Terminal and restart your computer.

You can now connect your Hauppauge WinTV TV tuner to your computer and it should be available for use by your Linux TV watching application.

I’m specifically asking about the UDEV mechanism which is what grants hardware access to non-privileged UIDs , such as plex, provided they are a member of the group (GID) which owns the device (as asserted by the kernel/FUSE driver )

your probably right chuck. not sure how to give it permission though…

I uninstalled the snap version i had installed and reinstalled the dev version i finally found a link to one that worked and it worked thanks for your help chuck you led me down the right path!!

@horizonnet

open the terminal window:

Edit this to reference the proper USB node

ls -la /dev/usb*

Get the group name

sudo usermod -a -G put_group_name_here plex

Then restart plex

PS… The snap version (Ubuntu store) is super problematic if you want to grow beyond the most basic of features – like DVR.

the best part is this Linux version fixed the buffering/pausing that the windows version had

Is the newest version of Ubuntu server compatible with the Roku app?

Ubuntu server is the OS. If you mean "Is 20.04 compatible? " , yes 20.04, workstation and server are compatible with PlexMediaServer.

I’ll check what version of PMS I have on the Ubuntu server. It won’t work with my roku. Works on the computer great.

I have an ancient Roku 3 and that works pretty darn well for its age. It plays higher bitrate than it’s actually rated for.

the version I have on the server is 1.20 instead of 1.24
i guess ill have to search for the new version download
