HBO Now Plex channel? (HBO Go channel as base?)

Hey all - now that HBO has announced their HBO Now package solely on apple products with a 30 day trial - I'm curious who might be interested in an HBO Now channel, or if it's possible?

I'm not a python programmer (ruby, php, actionscript) so I'm looking through one of the HBO Go channels that exist and wondering if it's something that might be helpful as a base?

I was going to sign in and use Charles (mac guy) or Netcat to see what calls / responses there are from the hbonow website, but if anyone's got advice or more experience that is interested...

Yes please

It’s browser based also so shouldn’t be too difficult for someone who knows what they are doing

I was just about to start poking around on this myself.  Though last I checked the last HBO GO channel was based on WebKit and thus not supported in a long time.  So not sure if that's a good starting point.

Since Plex no longer uses the Flash player, which is what most websites use to authenticate login info, unless HBO is going to offer publicly available API, it is most likely impossible to create a Plex channel that can deal with the login authentication that would be needed. There are a few sites that let you send the login info with the HTTP request, but that is not the norm.

This is where a set-top box for Plex is an advantage because you still get access to native apps for sites like this, though AppleTV has the exclusive on HBO Now until July.

Yeah, I have a pair of Roku 3's, and no desire to give them up.  I've tried every other device out there (Apple TV, Chrome Cast, Amazon Fire TV, etc.) and none of them compare to my Roku (though I have to admit the Fire TV is FAST, but lacks channels).  So I was looking for a way to close the gap and watch Game of Thrones on my TV until then.  This week I just plugged my Macbook Pro directly into the TV.  However as soon as I find the time, I'm going to capture the HBO NOW login process and playback process and see what I can make of it.

I am a Roku user too. I have looked into other boxes, but in reviewing the Plex forums for other boxes, Roku is just the best option right now between the native apps and how well the Plex app works especially Plex channels. Though I do need to upgrade at some point (still using 2XS) so I can use the new Plex app. But I do not see the point right now with the app still in development mode and all of the talk of a Roku 4 being just around the corner.

Take a look at the NFL Network channel. In that channel, the developer was able to send the login info as part of an HTTP request to get around the Flash player issue. https://github.com/41john/NFL.bundle

Any update, or progress on this? Being able to stream HBO to my “smart” tv would be incredible – sadly, i can’t justify upgrading this crappy television and it doesn’t appear Vizio is ever going to include HBO in their app store. Being able to bring that gap without adding yet another device would be heavenly. At least the tv has Netflix, so we have been alternating using the Vizio between the following: Plex (tv app), YouTube (tv app) and Netflix (tv app). Trying to stay in the same ecosystem, if you will. Running PMS on a Linux Mint 18.1 box and it’s been great since i made the move from Windows 10 a few weeks ago.

Thanks to everyone who keeps this great community alive! HBO features would be dreamy. :sunglasses:

Nope :frowning: HBO makes it impossible to create a Plex addon (closing the API, DRM, etc.)
