HDD don´t sleep

Hello,

i have an DS1522+ runs my Plex Media Server. I have some issues about HDD Sleep. I have checked the Synologty logs to have an idea why… it looks like that PMS do anything every 1 oder 2 hours…

i don´t know what Plex does at this time. I have some [PMS log](

In PMS i have disable all automatik jobs… just 1 time a day the maintenance runs

The HDDs will never sleep.

Plex is busy ‘just enough’ that the drives don’t sleep

In the long run, HDDs which are always parking their heads will wear out sooner (they have a limited lifespan). Best for them is to keep them spinning and thermally stable.

Each HDD consumes about 12 watts of power when spinning and stable.

What is Plex doing all the time when no Client are connected?

To be 100% specific

Is it possible they will sleep – YES

AFTER all the music is analyzed
AFTER all the video files are analyzed and deep analyzed
IF not recording DVR
AFTER updating metadata
AFTER all tasks in “Scheduled Tasks” are complete.

How frequently does that happen for most of us? Not very

I don´t use Music in Plex
i add new Movies/ TV-Show (1-2 new media files) one time a week max.
3.i don´t use DVR
i don´t Update Metadata
All are complete analyzed

Plex don´t work 24/7 7 days a week when change nothing or add new media… i can see that the HDD goes sleeping (Set 20minutes). Than all drives are sleeping für 1-2 hours… than Plex do anything for 1 second… 20 minutes later the HDD goes sleep again for 1-2 hours… that happens again an again

What is Plex doing fot this second? i logs i can´t see what happens

This has been an issue with Synology and Plex for a long time and no solution has ever been found, to my knowledge anyway.

Read this from Synology:

While Plex is an offender, as you may see, it is not only Plex that can cause your disks to wake from hibernation.

During testing, with the assistance of a Synology technician, we were able to determine that my drives do in fact hibernate for at least 10 mins. at a time, but there are many reasons why they would wake.

Plex being the main reason, but not the only one.

Things have changed since those tests were conducted and Plex does a better job now, but the issue is still not 100% resolved and it is not likely to ever be fully resolved.

As Chuck pointed out though, hibernating drives is not the best thing to do for a drives health.

Modern HDD’s, especially those designed for NAS usage, have no problem running 24/7, in fact they are designed to do just that, hence their NAS designation.

If it is any consolation, my DS1813+ is over 10 years old now and it has been running Plex all that time. While there have been some hiccups along the way, the NAS and the original drives are still going strong and no issues have arisen from a lack of drive hibernation.

I have noticed that when I stop Plex, hibernation works very well…

My main concern is to save power. In operation my NAS uses 45Watt, in HDD sleep 12Watt.

You have the following choices.

Live with what you have as far as HDD Hibernation is concerned.
Setup a power on/off schedule to shut down and wake up the NAS when it is needed.

Go to DSM Control Panel > Hardware & Power > Power Schedule and setup your preferred schedule there.

Write scripts to shutdown and restart Plex. You can then run the scripts using Task Scheduler at your preferred intervals, just make sure you allow for Plex maintenance.

I think that’s a bit cheeky… First Plex forces me to switch off my VPS server and run Plex locally at home and can’t manage to make the software energy-saving

I run my NAS OS including Plex on a NVMe array, my data is stored on HDDs and those are able to hibernate that way.

I"m on Asustor though, don’t know if thats possible on Synology.
