HDD keeps disconnecting during library scan, disabling the usual power-saving features doesn't work

I’m using an external HDD (not NAS) to hold media. However, whenever I scan the library, the drive disconnects partway through and the scan does not fully complete (even though the connection light is still on so it’s probably not a connection issue). I’ve turned off selective suspend on the external HDD and unchecked “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” in attempting to fix this, with no success. I’ve been trawling forums for days trying to find someone who has also had my specific problem, with no success. I’m at my wit’s end here trying to fix this.

Whenever it says “portable” or “power saving” then it will often disregard the operating system’s power saving policies and will only do what it’s firmware believes is best.
I’m afraid there is no cure for this, except using a different drive.

So basically, any external drive with an AC adapter will work?

Any external drive which hasn’t been developed to be super energy saving.
A regular 3.5" desktop hard drive in an enclosure is probably your safest bet. These enclosures are usually sold empty. There are single, dual, and multiple drive bay models available.

Would something like this work? (I don’t have much space on my desk so I’d prefer to minimize the space it takes up)

That’s the type of enclosure I was referring to, yes.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be on your desk though. Just a place where it can sit that is within reach by USB cable, and where it cannot overheat, or get accidentally kicked about.

Okay, it seems like solutions can be unchecked so I’m gonna mark this as a solution unless something goes horribly wrong on my end.
