HdDHomeRun PRIME transcoding (failure?) question

Hello,

I have recently set my PMS back up on my Mac. I think (but may be wrong…) that before when I had it set up, I was able to set Device Settings on the PRIME to transcode, and it would generate .mkv files.

It seems to generate only .ts files for me, with the CONVERT VIDEO WHILE RECORDING Device Setting in either the Off or Transcode setting.

I’m wondering if this is as expected, or have I an issue? Generating .mkv files by default would be better for me.

Mac is running OS 10.11.6, Plex Media Server version is 1.8.1.4139, HDHomeRun PRIME firmware is 20170815. I believe that PMS and HDHomeRun versions are all current.

Thanks to all; apologies if I failed to find the answer by searching (I tried…)

I have never played with the transcode settings myself but this is what I understand from seeing other posts on the forum. Plex used to generate a mkv file with the transcode setting turned on. The transcode was actually converting the mpeg stream coming from the tuner to h.264 and saving the file as a mkv. Then with 1.7.0 Plex switched to mkv as the default container ts files were no longer generated. If you have the transcode turned on you would get a h.264 mkv file, if turned off you got a mpeg mkv file. Then subtitles/closed captioning issues started being reported and with the 1.7.6 release Plex switched back to ts as the container. The transcode should still generate a h.264 file is it is turned on, otherwise you will get a mpeg ts file.

You should be able to use ffmpeg or some other conversion process to convert the ts file to a mkv file if that works better for your situation. Search for something like Mac Post Processing on the forum.

They changed the file container back to .ts files instead in PMS v1.7.6 and up.

Various arguments for and against but it seems to have stuck for now.

Thanks to all…
