HdHomeRun DVR Model Selection

Which HDHomeRun makes the most sense for use with Plex? Different models have different features, but I can’t tell whether they matter for use with a Plex server.

Here’s their comparison page, but it isn’t written for Plex users: https://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/

The page says the Extend is built to transcribe the media when it sends it to the viewer. I’m assuming that Plex does the transcription in our case, so Extend isn’t needed.

At that point, it looks like it’s Connect vs Prime. Connect does free areal broadcast, and Prime has a cable card. There doesn’t seem to be a model that supports both.

There are also older discontinued models that can be found on ebay for less money. There’s a “Dual” for $45 shipped. That’s about half the price of the Connect, but I have no idea if it supports the same features.

Which models did others choose and why? Does it make any difference? Thanks.

Also, SiliconDust offers an “annual subscription DVR service.” to get their program guide, or to do basically any real DVR functions. Link: https://www.silicondust.com/dvr-service/

Do we need to pay for this subscription to get guide data for the Plex DVR functions, or is Plex getting the data from somewhere else?

No there is NOT one that does “ALL”.
I use 2 primes for my cable subscription it gives me 3 tuners per device (so 6 tuners total).
If your not using cable then get the other one that transcodes.

The Guide service from plex DVR is given through plex i believe, not silicondust. (I use a different service all together for my guide data)

I use NextPVR as my DVR service and point plex to the folders.

Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks, SiscoPlex. So why would I need a device that transcodes? I thought that was all done inside of my PMS.

Its just my preference.
The model that transcodes will create a much smaller file when recording and the format of h264 is more compatible with devices across the board.

If the Prime does the transcoding, it doesn’t require any CPU power on your PMS machine. Good if you have a low power server like a NAS.
