HDHomerun Prime + Time Warner/Spectrum

Same problem here with HDHR Prime.
A very big disappointment for me as I was hoping to get rid of some cable boxes.
The HDHR with Plex DVR is NO solution…

The only way I have been told by TWC / Spectrum is to use a Tivo or Win Media Center (Which of course is not officially supported on Win 10)

Therefore, I do not have access to all the channels I legally pay for and there is no current solution.

@jjrjr1 - Thank you for the confirmation and ideas, I appreciate it. There is an article on howtogeek.com regarding how to get WMC to work on Windows 10. I haven’t tried it yet.

So I was able to get WMC working on Windows 10. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as which cable card reader to try with this?

Hey guys, hope you are enjoying your summer so far…

Just a random update here between the sunscreen and BBQ’s. For once TWC/Spectrum actually came thru on a promise and delivered some newfangled equipment to my house since our last correspondence. Now this comes on the verge of a total solar eclipse so you know that if I don’t actually get around to installing the stuff you can expect me to be making soap in the hills and foraging around for random food because the cable company delivered and the eclipse wiped out humanity.

@robertcaretta - Don’t get hung up on the small stuff. You will either have a good laugh if I fall into the same pit as you, or we will actually discover a solution.

@jjrjr1 - Still haven’t pulled the trigger on the right device for me… been to Best Buy several times now and have some pretty good replacements set up on standby…

@JuiceWSA - High Five! You do know that the Juice is Loose now, right?

Barring any cataclysmic repercussions from the aforementioned events, I hope to have the new, slightly old and dusty at this point, equipment up and running shortly. By shortly, I mean that we had a weeks long rain that prevented me from being outside. Cable Card and converter in hand… I will make a hot mess of something!

@lossofbreath , Using a CableCARD with the HDHomeRun Prime, were you able to access any of your channel lineup? I have an HDHomeRun Extend which I would love to replace with a Prime if my channels would work through PlexTV.

TW/S encrypts almost all channels except locals. I can record and view ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC, PBS with PlexTV through HDHR Prime. My clients include ShieldTV, Roku Ultra, and Tivo Roamio. I use the Tivo Roamio to record and view encrypted channels. It’s completely up to the cable co whether they encrypt channels. I used to live in another state with Verizon FIOS and the only channels that were encrypted were the Cinemax lineup. I used Windows MCE at that time and could record and view all other channels on any device that would playback a WTV file. Cinemax recordings were limited to viewing in the MCE and extenders. In fact, most of the unencrypted movies I recorded back then are still in my PlexTV library.

This is just FYI to anyone considering trying the Plex DVR feature. If you have Time Warner Spectrum the HD Homehome Prime will NOT work correctly with the TV service. What I discovered is most channels have DRM on them, and the HDHomerun does not support it. Therefore you will not have many channels available to you. The product in general was also quite glitchy. So IMO probably not the best partner for Plex. Not sure if there are any alternatives.

Hello everyone and hope to find you well in the New Year - This follow up post has been long overdue and I apologize for the delay and the lengthily response. As you all can tell, looks like we made it thru the woods and the holidays to boot. No apocalypse yet…

The quote from Robert here, at it’s base, is accurate… however, searching for things is ingrained in us all and I don’t think it painted a complete picture.

Let me give you a snapshot of what I have found thus far:

I finally hooked up my cable card and happy to proclaim that it was quite easy. I expected to find much more resistance here but maybe I’m just lucky… for now.

HD Homerun Prime up and running in my house with “home run” drops of Cat6 Ethernet to every device via a structured media panel. Probably not what you would find in the average house, but not so far that you can’t figure this out. Suffice it to say, plugged into my router and running as expected.

Now I went off and purchased a new TV from Samsung. @jjrjr1 You would be proud… picture was good and the connectivity options seemed to fit the bill. Easy set up and tied everything together nicely. Contrary to intuitive thought, one would think that you could simply select the HD Tuner and have your way, but you really have to choose the source, if tied into your network, HD Homerun DMS. This will source straight from the HD Homerun device and play all channels… including DRM protected channels. This is different than your normal interface and will require some getting used to…

I wasn’t happy there and wanted to spread this to my other network connected devices…

My main PC is a Windows 8.1 Pro that supports WMC. No problems here… device connected as expected and can actually record even the DRM protected channels. Tried to tie it to my trusty Xbox360 and now the problems ensue.

Xbox 360 no longer supports WMC and will provide no work around

Okay, no big deal… I go and purchase a Roku Ultra…

Now, I have an older, otherwise pristine TV, that I tend to do all my primary viewing. This was top of the line at the time but never had Ethernet or smart functions. I hooked up the Roku as a bridge and shortly found out that I could download the HDHomerun App to find that it would not play the DRM protected content. Bummer! Now you could option to select the Spectrum App… but I didn’t want to go that route.

A quick look to the supported devices and platforms for my dilemma and off to BestBuy to purchase a Nvidia Shield on the promise that it would provide what I needed. Not the case! This device would also not play the DRM protected channels. nor record them… Double Bummer!

So, after much thought and many F-yous… I returned to Google for the answer. I was lucky to find that a friend of mine had an Xbox One S he had in “quasi storage”. Hooked it up, and voila, DRM right at your fingertips. Not only could you see the channel but you had your own “guide”… DVR removed… triple bummer!

Gonna take a side bar here… I, like most, have been captive by the local provider for the content I view. Initially, when I embarked on this journey, I thought that I would come home with everything. Reality! I have had DVR at my disposal for over 9 years. That means that I have been gigged by TWC / Spectrum more times than I can count and realistically have never, ever, once decided to DVR a show. That said, my intent here is to provide the proper playback of my cable card with my devices and not so much capturing something that I properly pay for.

In the end… what are you looking for? Do you want to cut the “cord” and view your paid subscription on all your devices or are you trying to record all the episodes of “MASH” and “Golden Girls” to add to your library? Options are still there… are you?

@lossofbreath. Saw your post and wanted to shine in and say that I too have this similar setup with TWC and have HD Home run prime hard wire throught my house. Though I use Win 7 64bit on a small pc with WMC to 3 Xbox 360. And to this day they still support WMC with no issues. I heard Win 8 does not support WMC, if this is true is why you have issues.

@teabag1701. Allow me to lament…

I was late to the update scene and, back then, went from windows ME to 8.1. While I would like to explain the massive transition I will keep my tongue and save everyone. Suffice it to say, this was a massive change… again, at the time.

One of the challenges that come to my mind when I upgraded to 8.1 was the fact that I had to purchase 8.1 Pro to make WMC work. This was a calculated purchase with functionality for my 360 in mind. It worked for several years… and I’m not sure when it stopped… only that when I went to hook up my card and HR Prime it was no longer functional. Hours on the phone yielded zero response and every dead end led me to believe that it was something to do with my firewall and a third party. Third party software was removed and the extender was still unrecoverable. The final result came straight from the mouth of Microsoft via email… No longer supported, hence all my problems.

Seems like a ridiculous quandary. Works… doesn’t… read anything anywhere and you will find that everyone has no problem, except for me. Story of my life!

Curious though, @teabag1701, I do have a 7 machine in the boneyard. Maybe I should hook it up to see if I find the same dead end…???

Well if you find time to try it, than atleast you’ll know. I would like to help more but I can’t duplicate the problem if it’s just doesn’t work at all. Let us know what you find, but you can still have faith that our setup still works.

here’s what i have found in my searching

in the HDhomerun status. you will see where it say “tuning resolver” and it is disabled. while searching the internet, i read stories of people trying several different TA until they get that status to switch to success, then they are able to do what we are desiring. I am on my second TA, will try another one next week…

So here is my issue with the setup I dont have xbox 360 anymore and if I am not mistaken WMC only supports 4 streams.

after reading this thread and other info around the internet is the following a solution? i don’t have any of this set up but i’m considering HDHR and spectrum.

so from my understanding, WMC can “bypass” the DRM, correct? is there a DVR feature or software that can record off WMC and store in a local folder or server? then add that folder to Plex as a library and be able to access it? is the recorded content remain DRM? just wondering if this is a viable solution.

can xbox one s record DRM content from HDHR? then store it at a location that plex can add as a library?

just a thought. i don’t have the set up yet but i have plex and moving to a new home we will be getting spectrum as a tv service but would love to save on the box rental fees.

Anyone know enough to possibly make a plugin to add spectrum channels and possibly even guide to plex?

Hello @w1n78 hope you are enjoying your summer so far. I have to tell you that I haven’t been so active with my personal pursuits with the nice weather. I made a test run with recording DRM protected media and can report that WMC, with my setup, will indeed record as expected. While WMC will store this data in a separate folder, I don’t see why you could not rip this into Plex. Again, haven’t tried or put it to the test, but don’t see why it wouldn’t work… so far.

I am not, by far, the smartest person here but from what I can tell WMC will understand and deal with DRM and record it appropriately. This is nothing different than the old days of a VHS recording but on a different scale. You heard me correctly… VHS. Make your jabs… I can handle it.

Honestly, I have to say that I should have grabbed on to this earlier in the game before they found a way to shut me down. Set up your recordings and go. Take this and run before they find another roadblock to throw up.

Like many people playing the cable game, I’ve been disappointed with hdhomerun prime and TWC/Spectrum. I purchased the hdhomerun prime a couple of years ago with the expectation that I could use it as a tuner and DVR solution. Unfortunately, the TWC DRM issues make it pretty useless as a DVR, but as a tuner it performs reasonably well. It seems to record DRM channels, but I’ve never been able to get the recording to play.

I recently switched to the Spectrum TV service and parted with TWC when TWC started encrypting all the channels in my area (Columbus, OH). At the time, the word I got from sales and tech support at TWC and Spectrum was that none of my TVs or hdhomerun prime would be able to work with any of the channels once they made the switch to encryption on everything. So I figured the TWC service was going the way of the dodo, since Spectrum acquired them, and I gave in to the inevitable by switching to Spectrum. I fully expected hdhomerun prime to stop working with the cable entirely, which so far has not been the case.

My setup includes a cable card, and a TWC supplied device they call a “tuning adapter”. They told me that this equipment would cease to function, but that is clearly not the case, because before and after the switch to Spectrum, I can still view both non-DRM and DRM channels. I can record and play the non-DRM channels, but like before I can record DRM content, but I can’t play it once it’s recorded.

I’m not sure where I’m going with all this, except that I’m posting here in case it helps someone else

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to provide some info as I stumbled across this when trying to resolve my HDHomerun Prime + Spectrum + Plex issue. I was able to get this up-and-running successfully after a few hours of pain.

First I went to the Spectrum store and told them I want to lease a cable card for TiVO. They provided it to me along with a cisco tuning adapter which I did not think I needed initially. Turns out the TA is not only required, it also needs to be connected in a specific way which I only discovered through trial and error (the only diagrams I found online were inaccurate). Without the TA, I was only getting 2 channels.

The correct configuration is to only use the USB line from the HDHR to the TA - meaning, no coax should be connected to it.

Once I did this, my channel list started populating immediately. Hope this helps!

UPDATE: so now that my channels are populating correctly, I now see the DRM issue others are complaining about - DRM channels are listed as ‘protected’ in my Plex list.

From what I’ve gathered, this is a limitation within the HDHomerun Prime which the Prime 6 should resolve, once it’s released in the near future. I am able to watch protected channels in the HDHomerun app.

The Prime 6 will not change whether or not DRM channels can be viewed in Plex. Plex would have to support DRM and that would mean being CableCARD certified and I doubt that will happen anytime soon.

Yep, you appear to be correct. Thanks for the clarification. I’m bummed out now…I was so excited thinking this would work…
