Cannot tune copy once only protected spectrum channels with homerun prime

So i have spectrum cable tv. I received my cable cards (cisco) and tuning adapters and set them up connected to my hd Homerun prime and updated the firmware on my primes. I then called spectrum and paired them without any difficulty. I then scanned for channels on the hdhomerun webpage and it found all the appropriate channels. Then I went into plex and added the homerun prime to my dvr service and it also corrected showed all the channels. I then downloaded the guide on the plex app.

I am able to tune all stations but a subset of about 20 channels. I have tried everything but today noticed that if I go to the tuner webpage while it is trying to tune one of the channels that I have been unable to tune it says under CCI protection: copyonce. All the channels that I am able to tune say Unrestricted. So is this a known issue? i have googled the question and searched forums on plex and silicon dusts website and can’t find any direct statements that it is unable to tune copy once stations.

I am running plex as a docker in an unraid server, but i also tried with hd homerun prime’s software on my computer and still am unable to tune that subset of channels with the copyonce DRM flag.

Am I just going to have to live with it or is there a workaround?

Thanks

You’re not alone. I cannot tune those with Plex either from Fios. The only device I have found that will (other than a Windows Media Center PC) is the NVidia Shield. Both the Tube & Pro can tune and watch DRM channels.

HDHomeRun software can also tune and record these, including, I believe, an Android client. I don’t think their software supports transcoding for weak home networks/remote viewing though (which makes sense). But it’s an option for wired home networks/very nearfield WiFi.

So apparently you are not understanding my question. I did read THE ENTIRE FAQ. These are not DRM protected channels like HBO and Showtime. These are channels like TVland and Turner Classic movies. They have a Copy once flag. I had the Spectrum tech out today and we discovered that if I disconnect the tuning adapter from the HDHomerun unit I am able to tune these channels but I lose the SDV channels. Plex is perfectly able to then play these channels although neither the tech or I can figure out why… So sorry you choose to be sarcasic, obviously you don’t understand the problem…

Thanks I will check those out though I did find a work around though I have no idea why it works. If I unplug the usb connection to the tuning adapter I lose the sdv channels but gain the copy once protected channels. Since I have two setups I just have to figure out a way to force the software to use one ip address or the other depending on what channels i want to view.

That’s DRM, which isn’t supported by Plex.

Your cable provider has configured those channels that way.

With mom-and-pop providers, it might be an accident, or they might not understand the impact. You might be able to talk them out of sending the restrictive Copy Control Information.

With big providers … honestly don’t bother.

I did understand your question. A CP flag of anything above (00 copy freely) Plex can not tune period. None of my premium channels, showtime HBO etc… have DRM/CP flags and I can view them anywhere. But, channels like NatGeo, Fox News, FX networks, even some OTA broadcast shows like NFL/NHL, have CP flags of (02 copy once) and I cannot view them with Plex at all. I’m not sure why but the HDHomerun software on my W10 PCs will not view them either, but, my NVidia Shield tube does play them back. I have not tried to record with the shield. The shield is almost a WMC replacement except for not handling the deinterlacing/de-telicining of 1080i material, everything else it does flawlessly including passthru HD audio streams, but the 1080i issue keeps me from completely switching over.

Hey David,

Having just done this exact same setup with Spectrum/HDHomerun/Plex I get 39 (none of which i would even want to watch) out of 452 recognized Channels from the hdhomerun tuner, so i feel your pain. I haven’t tried to set it up without the tuning adapter however. I haven’t messed with it since I got it all working with my Nvidia Shield/Live Channels app (with hdhomerun as tuning source) because that actually tunes everything no problem (including all the pay premiums, like HBO, Showtime, etc). I have no clue what the cost would be to Plex to incorporate DRM into the DVR so folks using cablecards can view content but id gladly pay an extra DVR fee to do it. That will be the ultimate solution as Spectrum isn’t going to turn off copy protection.

You may want to check the status on the Cisco Tuning Adapter in the hdhomerun tuning resolver interface found at (/tr.html ) if it doesnt look like:

Authentication-success
Downstream-success
Upstream-success
Operational Status-ready

then you are going to have some issues. Mine wasnt working and I ended up pulling one off an old Tivo setup that i was getting rid of for plex/hdhomerun setup and it worked. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I accidently solved the problem. I have two setups with two prime three tuners devices and two tuning adapters. Once during my experimentation to solve the problem i forgot to hook up the usb cable between the tuning adapter and the prime and lo and behold I could get all the DRM channels. Of course, I could no longer get the SDV channels which require the connection. So i hooked up one with the usb connected and one without. Then I went back to the channel discovery and unselected the drm channels on one prime and the sdv on the other prime. Now when Plex “looks” for a channel it automatically goes to the tuner that has that channel and voila I get all the channels.

Problem solved.

David

that was not directed towards you. It was directed towards the sarcastic response from the Plex employee who I paid (I paid for a lifetime plex pass) to help me.

An interesting if not hardware intensive solution, but why not if you have all the extra cards and 2 primes! I saved my card from the tivo so I might pick up another prime off ebay and try this. I’m curious when you ran the channel scan on the hdhomerun without the TA connected, in the hdhomerun scan screen does show those channels as dry or do they all appear as there as not dry before you run a plex based scan? Also is there a way to tell which are sdv other than them not showing up in the channel scans?

So I already had two setups because i wanted 6 tuners to be able to watch 2 tvs here and also have my kids watch tv at college and dvr things all at the same time if needed. I ran the channel scan after I setup the two, one with the usb connected and one without.

I dont know a way to tell which channels are sdv but as you surmised the one that was UNCONNECTED did not pick up any sdv channels. However, the other setup that was connected DID of course pick up the DRM channels so I manually unselected them so that when I asked Plex to tune a channel it would go to the setup that had that channel in its lineup.

It is working flawlessly with the exception that for some reason i still cannot tune TVland.

Hope this helps.
David
