HDMI Dropouts when used with Yamaha Reciever

Hi I was hoping someone may be able to help me with my issue, I'm very new to rasplex and am keen to get it running in my theatre room.

Issue: Vision signal is dropping out from raspberry pi to projector every few seconds, the HDMI led on the amp display flickers as does the HDFURY 3 blue led

Equipment: Sony cx70 projector, Yamaha rx-v473 receiver, raspberry pi with rasplex installed (current version) & HDFURY 3 - All running HDMI with the HDFURY converting HDMI - VGA for the projector

What I have tried:

  • Editing the config.txt file - increased the hdmi boost to 6 and also edited the HDMI group & mode to 1 & 5 (1080i at 60hz) - NO RESULT
  • Replaced HDMI cabling, changed USB power supply cable - NO RESULT
  • Bypassing the Yamaha receiver and coming straight from the rasp pi to HDFURY to projector - WORKS GREAT

So basically when I bypass the yamaha receiver it works great, when its connected it flickers and drops out, which makes me think the issue lies with the receiver and rasp pi talking to eachother.

FYI I can run my Set top box through the receiver using HDMI and works fine.

obviously I need to run it through the receiver to get audio so any help would be much appreciated

Please let me know if I have left any important info out

Thanks

Justin

This is not a Rasplex issue, more likely to be a Pi hardware issue around converting HDMI to VGA, just had a quick Google and found a number of mentions including this http://elinux.org/RPi_Screens#RGB_analog.2FVGA

Have you tried feeding the output from the amp to an HDMI device, suggest you put the settings in Rasplex and config.txt back to default first.

I run my Pi through a Sony AV Receiver to an HDMI TV without problems.

Thanks for getting back to me Ned,

I  understand this is not a Rasplex issue but was more hoping someone has experienced this and come up with a solution.

In regards to your link - The HDFury3 I'm using is actually powered so shouldn't be drawing anything from the pi

I know the Pi works with the HDFury3 when I bypass the amp, So converting HDMI to VGA definitely works.

I know the amp works with the HDFury3 when I send Set Top Box or my old WD Media Player, So HDMI out of Amp to VGA is also fine

There is an issue somewhere between the Pi> Amp> HDFury3> Projector

I'm sure there is a way to get it working... looks like another late night !

Hey judder,

Did you solve the HDMI dropouts via the Yamaha?

I recently hooked up a Mac Mini --> HDMI -->> Yamaha RX-V677 --> HDMI ---> Epson Projector and am getting similar display dropouts every few seconds. I gather its the Yamaha causing us grief, as like you, bypassing it works fine. Ive tried all sorts of settings on the Yamaha and Mac to no avail. I'll keep plugging away though.

Hey boof,

I didn't manage to solve it, I ended up reverting to my Apple TV instead of the Pi.

The apple TV seemed to work fine through the Yamaha amp.

I did have to play around with the HDMI settings in the Yamaha amp and also made sure my HDFury was not outputting a higher resolution than my projector could handle (max was 1080i)

Lots of trial and error (and swearing at technology) but it has been working fine now for over a month

Good luck

Im having a similar issue with my HTPC setup. I have an Ubuntu machine running Plex Home Theater, outputting directly from the HDMI out port on my ASrock motherboard to my Onkyo TR-606 out to my Panasonic Plasma. When I start a movie in Plex everything starts great, the Onkyo recognizes the HDMI PCM MULTICHANNEL signal and lights up accordingly on the front of the reciever, but every few seconds the audio drops out and the HDMI and MULTICHANNEL lights flicker on and off on the Onkyo (the video continues to play during this). NOTE** this is with all the passthrough audio options turned OFF in the Plex Home Theater settings, as turning any on would result in either no audio or terrible frame rate stutter/drop frames in the video. Hoping someone can help.

Hi Jgorhan. Did you ever find a solution to this problem?

I've got an Onkyo TX-NR636, a Synology NAS running Plex backend, and a RPi2 running RasPlex 0.6. The audio drops out intermittently. If I tell RasPlex that the amp isn't capable of DD or DTS (blatant lies!) then the audio doesn't drop out. Seems to happen more if I'm watching TV shows as opposed to movies; both of which are presenting AC-3 5.1 tracks, so this makes absolutely no sense. Perhaps the amp just doesn't like my taste in TV..

Can you ssh into your Pi and paste the output of this command: tvservice -a

PCM supported: Max channels: 6, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max samplesize 24 bits.
     AC3 supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 48kHz, Max rate 640 kb/s.
DTS supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 48kHz, Max rate 1536 kb/s.
  DTS_HD supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 8 kb/s.

You should get something similar to above.
