HDMI Mini PC's with Plex?

Also you dont want that nuc you want this one with the built in IR.

Does DTS-HD work with yours? I was just reading that in August they removed it from the tech specs manual and some googling it seems that it works for some people and for others it doesn't work. Having DTS HD work is pretty important to me. Is it just a driver or BIOS issue?

DTS-HD and TRU-HD all work via passthrough as far as I know.  I think I read there were issues with it with windows, but in linux (openelec) it's just a passthrough.

Thanks for all the help! I went ahead and ordered the NUC you mentioned and the RAM, I have a USB stick already so I'll use that. I should receive it all by Friday so I'll be back sometime this weekend to set it up!

Good luck with your choice, hope it works for you.

Regards

I was perusing Fire TV reviews on YouTube earlier today and one reviewer specifically stated that the Fire TV does do Dolby Digital and DTS passthru but can’t do Dolby Digital True HD or DTS Master Audio. Anyone have any hands on with Fire TV who can confirm or deny this capability?

You'll be glad with your choice. I just got mine up and running yesterday and I'm VERY pleased with it. It's not the cheapest option but it is very user friendly. User friendly enough that the warden and jr both think it's easy to use.

If you run into trouble with the install take a look at my thread and what I had to do to get everything working like I wanted. It may save you some setup headaches and time.

Well if you're ok with the chromebox not being able to turn on via the remote, or dealing with the odd sleep fan issue the chromebox is the way to go.  I have both, and the chromebox method did work, took me about 30 minutes to get it all modded over.  But for me I like having my nuc off when I am not using it.  And the chromebox didnt go to sleep nicely when it woke up the fans would run about 60% until a reboot.  So there are some issues you have to deal with for the lesser price.

About the power issues (which I also found annoying), I'm using this $12 power supply with my Chromebox

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RL9XQW/

It will detect when there is power draw to the TV and automatically switch on the other outlets on the power strip, which the Chromebox is plugged in to. When it detects that the power draw to the TV drops (when it's off) it will automatically switch the power off to the other outlets. The Chromebox will auto-power on after a loss of power, so this is a good long-term solution for me. I like it because I won't have to remember to go through the navigation menu on the box to shutdown or standby. Been using it for a week and have not run in to any issues. Not ideal, but it gets the job done.

Newbie here and this thread has answered many of my questions trying to decide on going the NUC route.

Quick question - I have a Samsung tv that has a Plex app (assume this is the client part). But of course I need a media server. Openelec seems to be XBMC-related (which can be fine by itself), but if I want to go the full Plex way and install a Plex Media Server on the NUC (so I don't need a dedicated full-fledged computer running all the time), the only solution I've been able to find is an add-on that has not been updated for years and now is incompatible with the latest Openelec release (see links below).

I also found something is being built by Plex for Plex Home Theatre (see link below) - but does this include the "server" part OR is it just the "player" part?

Thanks again for all the help. As a newbie, its refreshing to see all the support!

I would def not go the way of the openelec pms add on, if you're going to get your feet wet with plex you can and should use the nuc nothing wrong there (just have to go the linux or install windows route on it first)

Thanks Ninja for the quick reply.

Yes, I want to use the NUC, but how will Plex work without a media server? From what I understand (again from a beginner's perspective) Plex needs 2 parts - a client (the Home Theatre) and a server (the Media Server). My TV looks like it serves as the client, but where are you saying then the server goes - the NUC, right? Does Openelec work with Plex Home Theatre alone with out the PMS?

Thanks again for all your insight!

Bender you are correct in that you need the 2 components, the server and the client. Well the client isn't needed per say but it does make things easier. You could always use a dnla compatible device to view your media on your plez server but that comes with it's own set of compromises.

The NUC is not appropriate for a Plex server.

Thanks for the feedback TurboJailer.

My initial goal was to have a configuration that did not rely on my laptop (as I do not want to use it as a dedicated server in case I am not home and someone wants to view movies).

I guess I may have misunderstood the original question of this thread as I thought Mike was looking for a similar setup. And it was suggested by Latte to get a NUC to handle part of the described configuration. Both Pi and Chromebox were other options.

My current setup is...

(1) my media on my NAS

(2) media played back on TV (Samsung TV has a Plex app but requires a separate server)

Anyone have suggestions based on this that does not rely on a dedicated computer OR replaces it with something else? If Plex absolutely needs a dedicated server, it sounds like people are saying a NUC, a Raspberry Pi or a Chromebox all have there drawbacks. And no one seems to think any of them can handle the processing power required by PMS. Is that correct?

The i3 nuc can be used as a server if your media is on a NAS, it has a passmark greater than 2400.  Also if he doesn't need anything that will be doing a full transcoding then you could even run that on a celeron nuc.

Hi Latte - thanks again for detailing the NUC possibilities as a server. And yes, my media is on a NAS.

But in regards to your statement of NOT using the openelec PMS add-on - what then is installed on the NUC (other then openelec) to make it a Plex server?

I'm back after getting everything set up. It was actually incredibly easy and I'm very happy with my choice in building with the NUC. The total cost was about $180, which was for the Intel 2820 NUC and I put 4GB of RAM on it, and I already had a USB flash drive to use on it.

Bender - I was building a client, as I already owned a QNAP NAS that I was using as my server. Before I had my NAS I used to import all my content to iTunes and had a full iTunes setup with an AppleTV but I was getting tired of the 4-6 hours it took to use Handbrake with each movie in converting over into a iTunes friendly format.

Now, I run Plex Media Server on my QNAP NAS, and my new client is the Intel NUC running Openelec+Plex from this thread

Works great! Thanks everyone!

Now, the only issue I am having is with my Harmony remote. When I turn it off, it powers down the NUC and I have to manually boot the NUC. I'll keep digging to find the right Harmony setup....

Did you follow the harmony remote setup guide on the openelec wiki? That's what I did and it worked perfectly for me.

http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title=Config_harmony

Does anyone who might have the same or similar setup ever have their have issues if the NUC is on for a long time?

I went to watch something yesterday, it seemed like the whole thing had completely frozen and upon a hard restart it sat on the "Intel NUC" screen for a while, then when it was trying to get DHCP it spun forever then said I didn't have a boot disk. Nothing had changed in my setup from the previous time using it... not sure what happened. I have been booting off a USB stick, just ordered a small SSD drive to use instead so I'm gonna try to re-load it all that way.

Also, before this main issue, it always seemed like it would be extremely slow or nearly frozen if the NUC was on for any extended period of time. I thought my Harmony (following these instructions: http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title=Config_harmony)should have turned it off/put it to sleep when I press the power button but it doesn't work that way for me.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out.

Hello! You still happy with your NUC? I am looking to decommission the VM(with GPU passthrough) that I have been using for my media server for something a little more power friendly.

I am interested in the Intel Compute Stick, but could be swayed towards the NUC if it is working well for you. The cost difference is really not that great. Controlling it with my Harmony is also a mega bonus, haha.

Also, it was my understanding the Rpi does not support DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD audio formats, has this changed?
