HDR Movies flickering when refresh rate switching is enabled

Recently all HDR movies flicker when refresh rate switching is enabled. The TV is a Vizio v505-G9. Issue occurs regardless of client (Nvidia Shield 2017 and Xbox One S tested). HDR works fine in other apps such as Netflix or Vudu. There isn’t any loss of signal (not a problem with cables), just a slight constant flicker as though the screen is being backlit by a candle. This flickering continues even when the movie is paused. Turn off HDR and it goes away, turn off refresh rate switching and it goes away. When both are enabled it always occurs. I found a workaround on the Nvidia Shield where I can use an app from the play store called “refresh rate” to force Plex to run at 23.976fps so refresh rate switching isn’t needed for movies, but this ruins live TV functionality along with other sources that aren’t 24p. Basically any time I want to watch an HDR movie in Plex I have to go dig through the refresh rate app’s settings and set the frame rate ahead of time. Not ideal. Anybody understand what’s happening here? This never used to happen.

try turning off the new player? See if that fixes it?

I’m not quite sure what you mean, can you elaborate?

in the plex client app settings, if you look through the options there’s an “Enable New Player” it can be “On” or “Off”… turn it to off and see what happens.

You’re the man. This has seriously been bothering me for weeks and you fixed it in seconds! Anything I’m missing out on by now having this setting enabled? I don’t even know what it does.

There’s some perks to the new player, I am not sure what all they are… But they just started using it and it’s a bit buggy (as you can see), I’d start a new thread for it and let them know about the bug. Include any client versions you’ve experienced it on, as well as your server OS and server version. Also be as detailed with the explanation as possible, and make sure it’s tagged for the server type, as well as the client types.

I know, that’s a lot and somewhat of a pain, but if it’s done right, they can get the fix in and hopefully have it rolled out in some newer client versions.

Thanks man! I’ll work on it tomorrow.
