HDR to SDR feedback - situation with poor tone mapping of content

Player Version#: web via chrome and plex windows desktop

First off kudos on the HDR to SDR tone mapping. i’m posting this for feedback/identifying issues rather than criticism - seems to be working great 90%+ of the time.

Watching a movie today and the HDR to SDR tone mapping was waaay off in very bright (explosion) highlighted areas. Blown to purple - very noticeable as all the explosions instantly take on a cartoony effect and look ridiculous.

Same movie direct played looks great, and on SDR copy with no HDR looks great - it’s just a failure of the tone mapping to cope with this exceptionally bright/coloured area I think.

That’s an interesting example. That movie is known to have VERY bright hilights.

Yes I think it’s possible it’s just the extremity of that example that might have pushed the tone mapping into clipping a bit too far. Rest of the movie/scene looks fine

Just flagging as an example in case it helps further development etc.
