HDR to SDR Tone Mapping - Intel Quick Sync for new processors like Comet Lake

Hello dear Plex Community!

Since there is still no thread of my own on this topic and I don’t want to continue hijacking other threads, here is my own discussion that can then hopefully be identified as a success one day.

My server: Ubuntu 21.04 with current updates and software
Hardware: Intel i3 10100 with UHD 630 an Z490, 16GB RAM and P5 NVMe (RAM transcoding)

When I tried to transcode a 4K HDR source into an SDR, I noticed that this was done entirely in software and that the CPU was overloaded accordingly and the GPU was useless.

Then I was informed that due to the outdated Beignet and OpenCL packages, newer processors are not supported. Enable Comet Lake support by rcombs · Pull Request #20 · intel/beignet · GitHub

The solution to modify the packages myself is not feasible for me. If I understand correctly, the Plex team is working on a solution and wants to replace the outdated one.

The following processors do NOT yet support the tone mapping feature in hardware:

  • some Coffe Lake processors
  • all Amber Lake
  • all Comet Lake processors
  • all upcoming processors such as Rocket Lake or Alder Lake

So dear Plex team, I hope that the Intel Compute Runtime is the right solution for us and that you can integrate it successfully. I would be happy if this thread can be marked as solved in the near future. Many thanks and regards ! KCX

That’s not what @ChuckPa has told you:

The temporary solution is to download the source for Beignet & OpenCL, let it configure itself for your CPU, then build and install.

Compiling software is not the same as rewriting software.

@OttoKerner I’m sorry that I didn’t express myself 100% correctly, I didn’t mean to offend anyone… I corrected it. btw. English is not my mother tongue, so I ask for your pardon if I put it in the wrong way.

If you’re continuing to use Linux, you will encounter the need to recompile – inevitably.
You might as well learn how to do it now.

Nice comment! :ok_hand: really great support :muscle:

I have the information from another forum that I need to install Plex in Docker. Now it works @ChuckPa so there is a solution after all. USE DOCKER

btw. the Nvidia image is the best of all when it comes to tone mapping

greetings ! :v:
