HDR to SDR tone mapping; question

Hi,

can someone explain to me (like I’m 5) why I would need the new HDR to SDR tone mapping feature? It appears to me that when streaming HDR content from my Plex server to a non-HDR display, it’s already converted (or displayed correctly) without that feature. What am I missing?

Thanks

some clients can do color correction at the client end.

other clients cannot, and will have washed out colors.

the new hdr > sdr support enables the conversion at the server, so all clients can benefit

I see. Thanks for explaining. Does Pley detect if the client can do its own thing?

I don’t know.

I would assume that the server will do it for all hdr > sdr transcoding, so that color conversion can be consistent, but if for some reason the hdr/sdr isn’t working for a particular type of media (incompatible hardware and/or poor encoding), then I would assume the client would continue to work however it has prior to this feature.

Yes, absolutely.

Meaning server side conversion will only kick in if the client doesn’t support it on its own?

Yes, exactly. This is how Plex works with video codecs, audio codecs, qty of audio channels, bitrate, subtitles, streaming protocols, and about 10 other dimensions, too.

What are the client’s capabilities?
Does the source file match that?
Massage the stream if necessary.
