Hi, so i bought plex premium a month ago and started to use the HDR tone mapping, sadly when i enable it the movies that i stream will start to buffer. What specs/hardware are recommended for streaming 4k and using HDR tone mapping.
Current specs:
CPU: intel icore i7 2700k 3,5GHz
Disc: WB red 2tb
Memory: 16gigs ram
Example of one of the movies that are not working:
Format: HEVC
Bit Rate: 36.0mb/s
Width: 3840
Height: 2160
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Rate: 23.976 (24000/1001) FPS
Size: 62GB
I hope you’re otherwise enjoying your Plex Pass so far
That CPU is quite dated. It still gets a decent Passmark score of approx. 5600. That’s ok for some 1080p full HD transcoding – in order to deal with 4K you’ll need a lot more power though (or a CPU/GPU that support the transcoding / tone mapping)
I’m also having this issue and I have a Ryzen 3950x paired with a 1080 founders edition (patched to unlock unlimited transcoding). Not sure why I can’t enable tone mapping transcoding without the video file stuttering like crazy and being in off color when not transcoded.
I can’t tell for sure. Keep in mind tone HDR tone mapping cannot yet make use of the GPU on all platforms (see support article linked above). While your CPU with it’s 34000+ passmark score is a beast you need to keep in mind many of those tasks cannot be split across multiple cores… and all of a sudden you’re down to a passmark score of 2700 – my guess is this might be what’s causing your trouble… though it’s only a guess.
How do I verify the status of software transcoding? I assume I have a combo of software and hardware transcoding happening since I have a 1080 gpu handling hardware transcodes, but its not clear to me how to tell plex that it should use my CPU for Tone Mapping transcoding?
For now I’ve just turned off tone mapping in transcode section and I don’t stutter on the video that was stuttering for me before (netflix hdr content).
I have a series 6 I7-6700HQ and a GTX 1070. Is it because of the series 6 lack of HDR support that I can not get tone mapping to work or should it still work due to the GTX 1070?
