HW Transcoding permanent buffering with HDR Tone mapping

Server Version#:1.30.2.6563
Player Version#: 1.57.1.3358-5fd2a504, Panasonic TV client V 5,53,5

My Plex setup is exibiting constant buffering when HW transcoding 4k content to anything above 720p with HDR Tone Mapping. Every 1-2 seconds it buffers for about half a second.

I am using a i5 4570 CPU, 8GB DDR3, Nvidia GTX 1050 2GB RAM.

No matter the client and the connection medium, local, WiFi of wired Gigabit, all clients are buffering every 1-2 second, for res as low as 1080P 10Mbps. The server never goes to 100% usage, for neither CPU or GPU.

When disabling HDR Tone mapping the streaming is smooth.

Are you already on the 64 bit server release?
If yes, then it may be simply your CPU is too old, and thus slow. It is 10 years and not that powerful, compared to other CPUs which can perform tone mapping fluidly PassMark - Intel Core i5-4570 @ 3.20GHz - Price performance comparison

You, sir, are 100% correct about not using the 64 bit version. Switching to it fixed the issue. With no subtitles, it runs smooth. With subtitles, it still glithces with buffering.

On a side note, yes, the CPU is old but it’s still rather good, expecially in conjuntion with the GPU for HW de/encondig…

The system never goes to 100% load, always stays around 60-65%.

Setup a RAM drive and point your transcoding temp directory to it. I had a similar issue when I was transcoding to a regular SATA SSD, and switching to a RAM drive allows me to do HDR tone mapping on a 4570 CPU from a 4K HDR source, without any stutter, as long as I am using an Nvidia GPU. Intel GPU broken for HDR tone mapping and reverts to software transcode which kills the CPU.
