Hi, Guys. Hoping all of you are doing well. So I’m very impressed with the HDR Tone Mapping technology and decided to switch from madvr to Plex as I like this platform. I know that the HDR Tone Mapping feature also is available in Plex so I have some questions about how exactly “tone mapping” works in Plex. I’m using a Windows HTPC application and noticed that the content is being transcoded to SDR rec 709 but not in BT2020! Is this normal work? Or is it possible to get Plex to transcode the signal in BT2020? In the MadVR there was a “checkbox” that was available only for NVIDIA and could do tone mapping with BT2020. As far as I understand the colors in BT2020 are better than in rec709. So what Color space needs to be used? Second question: in the Apple TV Plex application, the transcoded signal comes in 8 bits, not 10 or 12 bit, why is that? I tried to change display modes in the Apple TV settings but anyway signal is 8-bit, while in the HTPC windows application is 12-bit (set in the settings of the video card RGB 12-bit).
Sounds like you are hitting a bandwidth limit and that is why the content is being transcoded. The HTPC app can play everything that PMS can trannscode so bandwidth is the only reason why it should be requiring it. I can only guess because there are no logs nor any description as to why it is transcoding in your post.
What you really want is for the clients to direct play the content and then the client can do the tone mapping if necessary (such as if you have an SDR display). As to what mappings are available, see the MPV manual. These are available on all GPUs and not just NVIDIA.
