Help addressing configuration bottlenecks

Server Version#: 1.19.3.2764
Player Version#: Plex for Win10 1.10.0.1208-daa6b641

Hi all,

I need help to figure out what’s preventing a video from playing smoothly.

This is the 4K source file:

This file was optimized by Plex, using the setting “original quality”.

However when playing the file on my Win10 laptop, it stops regularly every few seconds and then it carries on , subtitles and quality are fine.

I tried turning on and off the hw transcoding, but it does not make any difference, since the stream is “Direct Play” to the my laptop.

The server RAM and CPU resources are <30%, the connection is 1gbit LAN for the server and 1600ac wifi for the laptop.

Before you shoot me, mine is just a test, going forward I have no intention of using 4K source materials, but I am testing the infrastructure so I need something heavy.

Why is this happening?
What do you need from me?

Which Windows Plex client is used on the laptop?
The web app?
If so, try using “Plex for Windows” or Plex Media Player instead.

Hi again Otto!

The problem is the same using Chrome Webapp, Plex Media Player and also Chromecast

I am a bit confused by that. If you created an “optimized version” of the file, did you make sure that you are actually playing this version?
What does the media info say about the average bitrate of this optimized version?

I owe you my apologies, I did not paste the mediainfo page for the optimized version. here we go.

And yes, I double checked, I was playing the optimized version

Don’t even try to keep an optimized version at 4K resolution. An average bandwidth of 56 Mbps (which means there will be peaks in the bitrate much higher) will max out almost every device.

If you create optimized versions, only go up to 1080p.
HEVC was created for 4K, so use that for 4K (i.e. if you want to watch 4K, use your original file. It is perfectly fine at 11 mbps for 4K).
