Plex media playback too slow

I have a laptop I use for my plex server. i3, 4GB of RAM and I’m playing movies to a Sony Bravia 4k tv. I’ve verified that it is playing direct and both have wired connections to the LAN.

When playing most of my movies, I get the too slow message. I have optimized files with the issue for TV playback and then they play with no issue. I have played movies over phone and other computers both direct and indirect connections and they all work.

When playing back one of the movies I looked at Perfmon and resource utilization across the board is low. The highest is Memory utilization but that is at 50%. It seems to me that the laptop has enough power to play back without issue. Any ideas why I’d have problems? Does the server or the player do the optimization? If it’s the TV doing the optimization I could maybe understand it but it is a fairly new TV set.

Thanks

Do lower resolution movies work without any issues? Also check the dashboard while playing to see if it’s Direct Play or Transcoding. If transcoding check the settings on the client side (tv) and set it so plays original and see if that helps.

the video was playing via direct play and the TV was set to Original quality. The video was 720 x 308. Low or high, the videos just play poorly unless I transcode them. The system is not starved for resources while playing too. I do have a spindle disk but it is 7200 rpm and has no fragmentation. Now the TV is 4K but the TV should be upconverting, not the plex server. Even when I put the home streaming down to <DVD quality it still stalls.

I also tried the same movie on an xbox and it played with no issues. Anyone know if the Sony TVs have an issue with Plex?
