Help Migrating from Windows Server 2012R2 to Synology DS1019+

I’ve been running Plex Server with Plexpass for over 9-years on various versions of Windows Server. I’m getting ready to retire my 7-year old Plex Server which runs on Windows Server 2012R2, is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo E7500, and is connected to an 8-bay Drobo Pro that has 16.96 TB of usable space of which 10.61 TB is used and 5.38 TB is free. This system has two functions, Plex Server and File share for the family.

I just ordered the Synology DS1019+ and 3 Seagate Ironwolf Pro 10TB drives. I’ve never used a NAS before so I’ve been watching lots of videos. and reading the “Synology FAQ - Questions, Answers, and a few How-To’s” My basic strategy is as follows:

  1. Unbox NAS install drives and get set up on Network
  2. Get DSM to current version, run storage manager, create single SHR volume for all drives
  3. Create folders shares and users
  4. Migrate data from Server to NAS
  5. Follow the Plex install strategy in the FAQ
  6. Download Plex Server from Plex onto NAS and run setup
  7. Point Plex to Movies and TV Series on NAS and let it auto discover

My Questions

  1. Is it best to create two volumes, a small one for Plex metadata & database and the rest for movies & files?
  2. Any special Settings I should enable on the NAS before doing the Plex install?
  3. Any hints or tips not covered in the FAQ

Notes
a. I was not planning on trying to migrate the database from the old server to the NAS but it would be nice to migrate the “recently added Movies”

b. I also ordered a pair of Samsung (MZ-V7E500BW) 970 EVO SSD 500GB - M.2 NVMe Interface Internal Solid State Drive with V-NAND Technology, Black/Red to help with caching

Thank you in advance for any Tips and tricks

Might be a good idea to review the other FAQ while there

Chuck - Thank you so much for pointing out these two FAQ for me. My drives arrived today but the NAS won’t be delivered for a few days so I have some time but greatly appreciate your reply.

Trumpy - Thank you as well for your reply and the Windows 10 tip is great as that’s what my wife and family use.
