Help! My Passport Wireless Pro problems - merges home videos between 2GB-4GB

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3876-3c3adfcb4
Player Version#:

Hi all.

I am new here and have been using the My Passport Wireless Pro 3TB (MPWP) for about a year now. Previously I’ve been using the MPWP & Plex for normal movies and TV shows and it worked fine.

Recently, I started including to the Plex library some home videos of our family holidays.

To my unending frustration Plex on MPWP keeps on merging and treating files between 2GB and 4GB as duplicates (Plex on my desktop, laptop works fine!). For info, I am using the latest Plex Server version 1.21.1.3876-3c3adfcb4 as of 18 Jan 2021.

See the images below:
A. My library screen

B. The duplicate video info

C. Example media info

As I checked each media information between those that were merged and those that weren’t and remained as separate videos - I found that only the media files between 2GB and 4GB were merged. Those below and above this size range were treated as normal individual videos. Don’t think this was a coincidence, but seems to point to some bug.

I had tried all sorts of troubleshooting:

  • Reset Plex Database from the MPWP UI
  • Delete my media files, and re-import them to MPWP
  • Do the Plex Dance
  • Restore Factory Settings on the MPWP - both “System Only” AND “System & Disk”

I am now at wits end!

I even posted an incident report at the WD Reference #210102-000038 on 1 Jan 2021, and escalated on 8 Jan 2021 - but never received any reply or acknowledgement from WD.

I am hoping that there is some good in this world with all the pandemic going round - so I come to the Plex community forums for help.

Hope someone can help a person in need.

Thanks in advance.

ps. not sure if my photo attachments would work.

Hi all - can anybody help me on this?

Fazz

I’m sorry I have to try this again - wonder if anyone can help?

As an update:

Thinking it could have been a problem with my old My Passport Wireless Pro, I bought myself a new WD My Passport Wireless device to see if the problem is recreate. To my despair - yes, the problem was recreated straight away.

It would seem that using Plex on My Passport Wireless devices for personal videos between 2GB and 4GB just doesn’t work as the Plex server on the device keeps merging the video files and presented in the Plex library as a single video.

I think using Plex on the MPWP or similar devices is not the right device for this kind of thing for me.

Thanks.

ps. this issue is cross posted to the WD.com community forums too - Help! MPWP Plex Home Video problems - merges videos between 2GB-4GB - My Passport Wireless - WD Community

That is odd. Thank you for report. Since these are mp4s have you checked to see if embedded metadata might be the same on all of them? (I’m guessing not but figured I would ask)

when hovering on the poster and selecting the menu on bottom right you should have a split apart option. Though I am wondering if you refresh after that will they recombine

The scanner and local media agent logs may be useful as well

Thanks for the reply @BigWheel

How do I check the embedded metadata for these files?

On the splitting apart. I’ve tried this before, but once I refresh the library it will recombine the files again.

[edit: I tried again to split on the new My Passport Wireless SSD device - and re-scanned, it did not recombine. But I had to re-edit each video title manually and find their own poster images manually. But in the past the rescan would recombine. Not sure why this time it didn’t.]

As for the logs - I downloaded the logs from the troubleshooting page - how do you wish to see this?

thanks again.

For Mac i use MetaZ https://metaz.io/

for Windows I think you just need to right click on file an choose “properties” then choose “details”

You can drag drop the zip file here, or click my username to message them to me

I downloaded MetaZ but cannot figure out how to view the metadata as each time I open the video files, I get some sort of message that video file could not be determined (for the mp4). For the mov files, I get a Failed to process file, AtomicParsley failed with exit code 2.

Is there another way to view the metadata on macOS (viewing the content on My Passport Wireless SSD via finder)?

Hi @BigWheel - any updates on this? I sent the log files directly to you via direct message. Hope I did it right and you got it.

Thanks in advance.

I am considering other options of having a portable plex media server aside from the WD MyPassport Wireless pro. Perhaps using an external USB SSD with a Windows laptop that I can bring around with me.

Thanks @BigWheel and all for the help.

sorry i have not replied. I was trying to reproduce this but i feel like I may be missing something.

I have set up the server on a raspberry pi and a small portable travel wifi router before. I just copied the few files i wanted on the flash card but you should be able to use an external drive with it.

Thanks for the assistance, @BigWheel - appreciate it. Sorry to have bothered you before.

Strange that you could not reproduce it. I bought another WD mypassport wireless drive, and still had the same problem with my home video files larger than 2GB. Not sure why this is happening.

It seems that mine is a rare problem which I cannot get any help from the WD forums / staff either. Looks like it is not something that will be fixed, so I plan to try another solution.
