[HELP] PLEX displaying incorrect aspect ratio

Server Version#: 4.12.3
Player Version#: latest

I have a problem with a Blu-ray rip that I can’t seem to figure out. The Blu-ray has an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, but Plex thinks that it is 1.33:1 instead. The XML file in PLEX says that the file is 1.33, and I cannot figure out how to fix this issue.

The file plays in widescreen in VLC, and MediaInfo shows the MKV file as 16:9 (1.78:1) as it should.

I cannot get PLEX to stop thinking that the file is 1.33:1. I have deleted the file from PLEX and re-ripped it multiple times and it works perfectly everywhere other than PLEX.

Any ideas???

Are you using a web browser for playback? Have you tried this file using either Plex app for the desktop or Plex Media Player?

Thank you for responding!

The playback is incorrect on all my media devices. I have three NVIDIA Shield devices, and it displays incorrectly on each of them, as well as the PLEX player on my Windows 10 computer.

The file plays perfectly in VLC, and the aspect ratio is right in MediaInfo. If I look at the XML in PLEX, the aspect ratio shows to be 1.33. I can’t seem to figure out how to get PLEX to understand that it is 1.78:1 (16:9).

Can you post the full XML of the file in question? Save it as a .txt file and then drag/drop that .txt file into your post.

Scroll down to the XML Information section of this support article for more information and I will see if I can get someone to look at it.

Thank you very much for your help! Please let me know if you need anything else.

This is the XML information from PLEX:

Antrum XML.txt (4.3 KB)

This is the XML information from MediaInfo:

Antrum XML from MediaInfo.txt (7.1 KB)

Just real quick, can you try the “Analyze” function on that file?

See the Analyze an Individual Item section from this support article:

I did the analyze thing and PLEX still thinks that it is 1.33.

After you do the rip, are you using any other applications to encode the ripped file?

It is ripped directly with MakeMKV. No additional processing is applied.

Can you please create a sample of this video file?

and make it available via google drive or somewhere? You and PM me the URL.

I used MKVToolNix and found that the segment cut from the larger file plays in 1.33 instead of 1.78:1 in VLC. I played the original file and it plays in 1.78:1 instead. When it is cut into small sections, the individual sections play at the wrong aspect ratio.

Do you still need me to upload sections of the movie? I can certainly do that if needed.

This may not be related, but there is a MakeMKV thread on aspect ratio.

Thank you for this! I read the thread and I will try setting the aspect ratio again in MKVToolNIX.

THANK YOU! That fixed the problem!

Thank you SO much!
