When I obtain TV episodes I rename them such as “Planet Earth II - S01E01 - Islands [4K].mp4”
Oddly enough, I just realized that Plex is showing this file as “Planet.Earth.II.2016.2160p.H265.10bit.AAC.Episode.1”. The file name is NOT named this.
I’ve refreshed the metadata, rescanned the library, removed said series, rescanned, then re-added the series. Nothing. It’s presenting the original name of the file rather then the renamed versions.
Since it was a small number of files, I just edited the episode name for each to the proper name, but curious why/how this happens and an easier way to correct it in case it happens to a series with significantly more content.
Sounds like your file contains embedded metadata and your library is configured to prefer that.
You could remove the embedded title or disable the option to prefer embedded metadata in the library’s advanced options.
How do I do either of those option? I looked throughout my settings to figure out the latter but could not find anything that made a difference. Not sure what tool I’d use to do the former…
Apps like Handbrake will usually write a title to the files they create.
If you’re on a Mac, you could use Subler to edit the metadata of the mp4/m4v file.
To disable the preference for embedded metadata:
hover over the library name in your sidebar
click ⋮ > Manage Library > Edit...
switch to the Advanced tab
disable Prefer embedded metadata
After applying that change, you might need to refresh the item’s metadata within Plex:
