So i just noticed this morning that in the last day or two most movie titles in my library just for some reason automatically reverted back to the filename instead of just the title? the only thing i can see is that most but not all are x.265 files? does anyone know why? I have tried updating and refreshing meta data, scanned library and nothing has helped. all titles were correct a few days ago and havent made any changes. The files are named properly and were showing up correctly up until the past few days
Thanks for your help!
So just before your reply I closed the pms and used a backup library database file from a backup a few days ago and restarted the pms. i did this because as i said everything was fine 2 days ago. but anyway this did work and everything seems to be named correctly now⊠But your diagnosis seems correct as that they did seem to be all mp4 files and I did drop down LMA in agents prior to but it didnt change anything until i did the restore. so hopefully this sticks because manually editing 500 files isnt really an option.
Luckily this is far easier than you would think. You can remove all embedded metadata(all titles) by selecting all the mp4 files, properties, details, etcâŠ
And if you are looking to preserve/and have good metadata then you could use a tag editor, such as MP3TAG.
You can batch edit w/ title lookup.
Thanks!!. but two questions.
one. should i do tha now with everything currently working?
two. how do you âselect all the mp4 filesâ to remove meta data?
I would. I would imagine this issue will crop back up. and it canât hurt if the metadata was gone.
Select all the files in Windows Explorer. Then from the file menu, select File->Properties->Details. Now erase the information in the TITLE field. Click OK.
They donât even need to be in the same directory. This will work on all MP4 files found by a simple windows search for *.mp4*
thanks for the tip to do a search for mp4, but when i have all the files selected and go into properties it doesnât give me a title field to delete anything. i can do this with only one file selected but not with all selected. Am i doing something wrong?
Okay⊠Seems like your version of Windows ainât gonna let you or Windows has a limit on the amount of files(size wise) itâs gonna allow. I never tested that limit theory though. The most Iâve ever done in terms of space is about 300GB Nevermind on that, just tested 659GB and worked just fine.
It seems like your version of Windows ainât gonna let you.
Can you still remove all from files in same folder?
Bingo!! apparently my version of windows has a limit. I had about 325 files worth about 650gb in that folder so I highlighted about half the list(140files, 265gb) and was able to get to the TITLE in details to come up, just had click on the âremove propertiesâ button on the bottom and from there could wipe the title field for them.
⊠and what was the reason you didnât simply demote LMA - wherein Plex will simply STOP looking in and preferring embedded titles in mp4 files for ALL current mp4 files - leaving you to not worry about it, other than removing said metadata easily via the âDetails Paneâ in your WExplorer on arrival (from now on)?
I absolutely couldnât bear the thought of ANY metadata in my video files (OCD - out of control), but others may be able to live with it - so long as itâs not making your life miserable.
I did in fact do that first, but it didnt resolve the issue even after re scanning library and refreshing all metadata and restarting pms,
On second note i dont think my issue with title field not showing in properties had anything to do with size but rather a rouge file that came up in the mp.4 search that was in the list⊠it was a xxxxx.mp4.plexignore file that seems to have cause the issue. when i saw that file and excluded it from the select all it works fine to remove the title field
Yeah⊠That would do it⊠Glad it worked⊠At least you can take solace in knowing that this issue will not come up again for any reason. Itâs a good thing to. If you have to rebuild or whatnot. One less thing to worry about.
Iâm with you on that⊠Years ago when I first ventured into the Plexvese and found complications with embedded metadata was it⊠Never again⊠With only the exception of intentional data needed to label episodes that are not on thetvdb(and will never be).
In fact, Iâm going thru all my mp4 files and removing all garbage metadata from the title, video track, audio track. Alot of release groups tags these tracks and I donât want that garbage info showing up if PlexInc includes track info as a feature.
yes, that is what I had to do but it wasnt working at first (it wouldnt show any other details like âtitleâ) because one of the files I had selected with the rest that was a âxxxx.mp4.plexignoreâ seemed to prevent that. once i excluded that file the blue link at the bottom is what allowed me to delete the titile field
Since you appear to be on Windows, a tip: get mp3tag
Open it,
point it to your âmoviesâ folder
Then CTRL+A to select all files
then âExtended Tagsâ
You can remove any trace of embedded meta tags here, including embedded cover art.
After you have done that, you can âOptimize MP4â in the right-click menu.
It is hidden under the âUtilsâ menu item, which itself only appears if you have exclusively selected mp4/m4v files.
âOptimize MP4â means âoptimize for streamingâ, or âWeb optimizedâ as it appears in the Plex media info.
