I can confirm that tone mapping for HDR content is also not working on Amazon Fire TV (actual TV) clients. Same washed out look.
@dklein I have identified the issue with mac servers and am working on a fix.
@neoeinstein We have identified the issue is limited to dovi files on linux based servers, potentially only when playing on android clients. Unfortunately, I need help from the android developers for this so it may take a little longer.
From my understanding, the goal is the latter (HDR/DoVi in → HDR/DoVi out if the client supports it). And I’ve found that to be the case from my manual inspection above.
Is there a way to use this on UNRAID with a docker container?
Will AMD GPUs be supported?
Read the introductory paragraph at the top of the thread.
I believe I have run into this issue. My server is on Ubuntu trying to play on Nvidia Shield.
@deneo6 are you attempting to play a file with dovi?
Yes. It’s actually a 4k DoVI/HDR10 file. It starts to play I get the spinning circle and it either freezes or it crashes and I get an Android logo and then I’m back at the shield home screen.
@deneo6 this is a known issue reported by @neoeinstein which we are attempting to track down. non-Dovi files should work as intended.
Thanks! Yeah, HDR only files seem to fine and the DOVI/HDR play fine on my LG Plex Player.
This is very exciting, I would like to recommend adjusting the btirates here for HEVC by quality, since HEVC can do about the same quality at ~1/2 the bitrate. As an example, I think 1080p should be possible at 4Mbps

This isn’t a bad idea…basically 12Mbps HEVC would be the equivalent to “high” for 1080p content with 4Mbps being the equivalent to “low”.
I need to see how the hardware transcode handles high grain media… as that’s usually where the smearing comes in.
Changing the bitrates is on our raidar but is easier said than done.
So excited to try this out! Any chance of a Docker image for the forum preview beta?
I ended up installing Ubuntu over Clear Linux just to try this out since a Docker image wasn’t available and I didn’t feel like creating one. Now if only Spatial Audio worked (hoping that’s a Pro Week drop)
You can do a custom install script with the linuxserver docker to install the forum preview. (I assume this is OK to say here)
Please feel free to share how this is achieved - lots of people are using Plex with Docker and I imagine many would like to try this out ASAP!
@chris_decker08 is it possible to set the tvOS.xml profile to have a transcode target of hls fmp4 so that my live tv streams transcode to hevc fmp4?
Still using the “old player” at this stage, only problem is live tv can only be h264 when in mpegts format.
Thanks for the hevc transcoding update anyway! Seems awesome so far.
@tree2369 most clients don’t use those profiles anymore, they either augment the existing profiles or hand craft their own. I will reach out to the apple team to see why they did not include that.
