Transcoding of HEVC broken with new version

Hi, This may be related but I found that the two most recent plex updates broke x265 HEVC playback with Hardware Decode on my Linux server, I ended up having to roll back to ‘plexmediaserver_1.22.3.4523-d0ce30438_amd64.deb’ which resolved the issue. with any of the two newer updates the Plex Transcoder process spiked to 200-300% and plex would freeze on mobile, chromecast or PC playback with any x265 HEVC encoded video.

Seeing this too. Wonder if they intend to push a fix soon.

Need DEBUG log files which capture the start of playback because I see no issues with transcoding.

I’m having the same issue also on Windows 10. I first noticed it last night but I haven’t watched a movie on Plex for a few days. I remember there being a server update very recently - yesterday in fact. In the dashboard when trying to play a movie with “details” shown I see that its playing at 4 mbps using direct play across the board and will frequently pause to say its buffering. Can anyone point me to a place to download previous versions of the windows server installer?

The latest update have broken HVEC files playability what appears to be cross platform. It would be great if we had someone look in to this and provide some feedback.

I can confirm that 1.22.3.4523-d0ce30438 works fine and no issues playing HVEC files under latest Linux Mint build.

Apart from having broken decoding in the latest version, finding where to download older version is not particularly obvious and the fact that new download page does not allow one to look for older version is pretty frustrating.

AGAIN,

I need DEBUG log files ZIP which captures this happening.

If no logs then no assistance can be provided.

Not being funny, but the onus is on you.

Works on my machine is not a helpful answer. It was reported that latest build is broken on Win10 and Debian / Mint. Mint in my case is version 20. Feel free to set up the environment to replicate this and thoroughly test it out, on the plus side you will have a lot more available to you to debug this than just logs.

Please be specific what logs and where exactly to find them, there are quite a few I can find but they might not be relevant to you. Right now it is not clear what debug logs do you want. Please be specific.

Please allow me to be specific:

  1. Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced
  2. Verify DEBUG logging is enabled
  3. Verify VERBOSE logging is disabled
  4. Click “SAVE” if either was changed.
  5. Start playback of any video which exhibits the problem
  6. Allow it to play for 20 seconds.
  7. Stop playback
  8. Wait 20 more seconds for log files and processes to quiesce.
  9. Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs
  10. Please attach the ZIP file it gives you here for review.

I am haveing the same issue, ALL of my H265/hevc media is broken, it wont play for 1sec let alone 20, so hope my logs can help. my server is win 2008r2, the clients are chrome, roku, an lg tv os (whatever it is) firefox, (linux, win, and mac) i used media that i have played recently. looked like an ini file might be missing, idk if that was the main coulprit just saw that skimming the logs.

PS sorry for bad spelling.

@Emberbronte

I cannot help very much with WIndows. I am a linux guy,.
I do request, Please turn VERBOSE logging OFF. It’s impossible to follow what’s happening as I see other playback at the same time.

In these logs – EXTREMELY difficult to read… I see transcoding.

Please change the logging back to DEBUG ON / VERBOSE OFF / SAVE changes
Start playback of problematic video file
Play 20 seconds
Stop
Wait 20 seconds
Download Logs ZIP file
Attach

I had turned verbose logging off to pull those logs for you. I went to re run the same test and it seems to be working now. i haven’t changed anything sense i ran the test last night, and then running it this morning, maybe settings are taking more then a couple minutes to take effect?

Hi @ChuckPa,

I’m also having problems with playback from a windows 10 server since the evening of 6/2. I’ve attached logs as requested. When I try to play something it takes 4 minutes to even get the first image up and then it just sits and spins. This happens for all files. In the logs the time I started debug logging was around Jun 04, 2021 16:26:47 but as I mentioned playback doesn’t start immediately.

@ElWig

I’m sorry but I a Linux engineer. I looked at your Windows logs and I can’t even make sense of them. I only understand a few things which are universal to PMS.

Would you mind reposting in a fresh thread and tagging is SERVER-WINDOWS ?

Actually I did do that yesterday @ChuckPa and I just updated it with the logs I uploaded to this thread but I haven’t got a reply from anyone. Can you suggest how I might get some traction on this from a team member familiar with windows?

After upgrade to server 1.23.2.4625-a83d2d0f9 android client can’t play files - Plex Media Server / Desktops & Laptops - Plex Forum

Thanks for taking a look BTW.

@ElWig

I’ve asked a few of the Windows guys to come look.

It is Friday evening for most so don’t know when you’ll get feedback.

Sorry

Thanks for following up and letting them know

you seem to be getting the same tuner service error i was getting.
file_tuner::get_stream_file. File C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources\Tuner\Private\devices\dvb\file\drv_file.ini does not exist
wish i had a solution, but mine seemed to fix itself over night, and this error quit apperaring in the logs.

Thanks for helping with what you’ve seen. What version of the client are you using? I’ve seen one case in the last two days where the same problem suddenly got solved. I’m hoping it gets fixed with the android 8.18.1 upgrade that i don’t have available yet.

multiple clients, most are on chrome. either on linux or windows.

This has been going on for a least a month now and is very easy to replicate. Just play a x265 video (especially at a reduced scale) after a pre-roll. You’ll end up zoomed when the actual movie plays and the device will crash if you try to resume.

You’ll only get to this point after working through the bypass audio bug that will allow it to play long enough to crash?
